I prefer to aquascape based on the lighting. I know in my tank I want to leave open spaces at the ends, atleast about a foot on each end.. that leaves me with about 5ft of linear length to light with decent intensity. I can get that with 3 lamps.
sanjay.

Thanks, I think for the time being I will aquascape with the three lamps. They are 400 watts, I am trying to keep my electrical bill as low as I can considering this size of tank. Would 4 250 watt's be acceptable, the tank is 30" high, with sps, clams and an anenomie?

I was thinking that 3 or 4 x 400=1200/1600 watts versus 4x250=1000wts.

juststartingout, I am going to be using 4x250w over my 96x48x30... I am also going to be using T5s but my tank will be mostly LPS and some SPS and clams... I will have to place the SPS closer to the 250w but I don't plan on having too many...

yeah I just don't know if 250W will be good enough in that deep of a tank. I am using 1000W and I think it's just about right and my tank is 35" deep.

It's also nice to leave plenty of room for the corals to grow. I see so many large tanks that have sps colonies crammed inches away from other colonies with no room.

This comment helped me make my mind up regarding my upcoming 700g reef tank next year. I am going to stretch it out longer than I was. I like the idea of open spaces.

Here are the pictures of the stand. It looks like it will be few more days to get this beast to
Sanjay (sorry buddy I could not yesterday and had to deal with few system's problems in town )

It looks like Monday might be the day and is the day you are getting the tank too. Wish if we all can be there to take the stand, and tank in the same day. How about getting all the stuff you need between the tank and stand and we might do that in the same day since we can have few people over. You guys carry the stand and tank and I can be the camera man to share them with everybody in RC :)

zooqi,

Could you tell us the dimensions of the stand, size of the tubular steel, and size of the I beams?

Was there any method to your madness in picking out the size (intuition, experience, load deflection software, could park a F-250 on it, etc.)?

Thanks!

Nice job, by the way.

Well, Zooqi and Bill (bmac) brought the stand over today. Drove the truck right to the entrance of the basement. Loaded it on 2 wheeled dollies and the 3 of us were able to take it into the basement.

The stand is basically made of 3 4" H-beams 7ft long, and the legs are made of 4 in Tube steel 1/4" thick. Its probably over designed. :D

A few questions about rust proofing the steel stand.

I was going to spray on a Rustoleum primer. What paint should I use after the primer ? How many coats should be enough ?

thanks,

sanjay.
