plug them it will be the best thing to do,down the road you will be glad you did. Have a good day.

Why? What's wrong with a closed loop?

You could always put in a BH with a plug on the water side so you had the holes available later...then you could attach something and remove the plug. Just a thought.

I agree. IMO, the dangers of CL's are being a little inflated here. Powerheads are not 100% safe either. Take the Tunzes for example. Their mounting brackets and magnets could not be made much cheaper. I always wonder if one day I will come home and my stream will have dislodged itslef from the magnet and blown around the tank destroying corals or even worse... stopping in a position where it was actually shooting water out the tank and draining half of the tank. Sure, that would take a pretty freak incident to occur but we know how murphy works. I guess I'm just a CL'er for life. Which explains why tank is drilled with 19 holes. I will still take the slight risk of a bulkhead leaking (which has never happened to me) over filling a tank with powerheads.

A friend of mine had half of his 200 drain when the bottom of his wavebox came loose and fired water right out of the tank. Caused a small fire.

I actually have both internal pumps and a closed loop. I'm not sure either is much better than another. Anything we do has inherent risk.

Use both.

I use my closed loop to flush areas like the back of the tank--places that are inconvenient to stick powerheads, but you know you need to "flush".

Some powerheads are useful b/c you never really know all the places you want flow until after the tank is up and running.

As a precaution, use threaded bulkheads for the closed loop so you can plug it as needed for maintenance etc....

You'll definitely want to try the polario pump on your closed loop when it comes out.

If the Vortech "comes loose" it stops running. No doubt there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. I feel the scale tipped toward Vortechs in my situation. Too bad I don't have them YET!!

Are you on crack RG? That makes no sense at all. One of the key selling points of the Vortech is that they use so little juice and stay virtually at room temp. And why would heat make a magnet not work?

Wow, the pessimistic ideas in this thread are getting very old! EVERYTHING we do in this hobby has a chance to fail. The key is just do it right! Wire your house and lights right so you dont have a fire. Plumb your tank right so you dont have a flood, etc. If I listened to all of the nay sayers out there I would never set up a tank at all!

Sanjay - you already drilled the tank for a CL. CLs work if properly setup. I say go for it! FYI - I am in the middle of setting up my new tank and guess what - I have two CL systems. I almost stopped like you about a week ago. CLs can work though! I am just making sure I set mine up correctly. :)

The magnets on vortech pump could lose magnetism from the heat of the motor at high speed. The same thing can happen if you leave the magnets in a hot car in the summer heat.

Ok.. while the CL debate rages on... here is an update pic.

The tank has now been framed with the wood. The bottom panels are completely removable to give full acess to the bottom from the front. The back is already fully open. The top lid is hinged so it opens fully, since I figured with my short reach any access will be valuable.

Looks very nice indeed.

CL vs pumps. They both have a place I think. I know the points that Greg Schiemer was trying to make and to some degree I have to agree with him. However just like myself, you already have the tank drilled. Put some bulkheads and plumb it for the CL like you planned. You will want to use the CL for ways and areas that are not easy to do with power heads. I myself had 5 CL in my tank and now run one for 6 hours alternating. I added 8 tunze 6200 to make up the difference. The single reason was to cut down on electrical usage. However Those tunzes are nowhere near as much flow as I had before with the CL only. I am saving tons on electricity now, but it does come with a price so to speak. The bottom line is you would want to use both really.

Sanjay,

I like the look of what you have done. BTW, I did pick up that frag for you at Exotic Aquaitcs and it's got great color!

Very nice matchbook panel on your hinged overhead.
Go with what you got. The holes are drilled, use them.
There are plenty of CL tanks out there that work perfectly.
I`ve had a bottom drilled CL for 4 yrs, and never give it a second thought.
I`m setting up another one as we speak & I also have it bottom drilled. I have 3 other reef tanks that don`t have a CL system. Either way I would not change horses now if I were you.
And btw, good luck.
HA! that was mean.

The key to not having your schedul 40's leak. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN them. Hand tight and a 1/4 turn with a wrench. If it has a slow leak another 1/4 turn, wash rinse repeat. (thats not to say you can't get a faulty bulkhead) When you over tighten, the gasket flattens and doesn't get a even seal, it and can also warp the bulkhead.
