This thread is ridiculously overwhelming. Freakin awesome Sanjay! Just curious on the money side...if you dont mind...how much would it take to set up a tank like this (equipment, tank, livestock, and everything else)? Just a ballpark figure would be nice. Thanks, and what an awesome tank!

I have learnt a long time ago that is not a good idea to tally reef related costs for several reasons. :D :D :D

About how much do each of those pillars weigh?

I dont know how much they weigh, since I built them one peice at a time and under water. I did not want to risk carrying large stuff like that over my glass tank, in case of any accident. My guess would be rougly 30-50 lbs on the larger ones.

Here is some more pictures.. I still have more rock to assemble, am waiting for the fiber glass rods to show up.

Here is one of the smaller ones.

The full tank as it looks right now... once I add the remaining rock will have to do some tweaking.

I left good space at the back for water circulation.

Great negative space!

What would happen if one were to fall over?

They wont fall over. The fiber glass rods are quite stiff and the rods are firmly attached to the base. the flat base helps a lot in preventing any toppling.

Great job thoughs are really impressive, can't wait to see the sand added and some corals. How long do you think it will be till you start to add your first corals?

Sanjay

From your own post.... "So here is a new idea..... use flat land scaping rock as the base to build the rock structure on."

Wanting to know specifically what to look for in a flat andscape rock to use as the base. Worried about the landscape rock breaking down or leaching chemicals into the reef and upsetting the chemical balance of the water. Sandstone, slate, concrete (what kind of concrete?), ect.
On the other hand what not to look for?
Thanks in advance.

Well, I went to lowe's looked around thier rock, and found some that were some kind of concrete rock with some aggregate mixed in.

I have no easy test to determine if they will leach anything lethal. I am hoping they turn out to be a problem. I have seen people use cinder blocks in tanks and do fine, so I am hoping these will be fine to use.

The sand will go in late next week. After that I will wait about 2 weeks before adding any corals. I might get impatient and add the earlier.

I finished adding the rocks... here is what it looks like now.

Nice Work Sanjay.

Do I see a little PVC pipe and drilled rocks there?

Are you not worried about stability of the structures, they look a little top heavy for such small bases, especially once turbulent flow is added.

Paul.

Paul,

Yes, they are drilled and I used fiber glass rod (1/2"). Used your design :D

Its very rigid and the strutures are not easy to move. The rods are cemented into the base and that makes for quite a rigid structure. The few that I have with acrylic rod were swaying a little but still not much. I will most likely cable tie those adjacent rocks if I have to, but I do nto see them toppling over at all.

sanjay.

Very intersting. I wonder if you could mount the base that hole in it to the bottom using cilicon before adding water and then you make your rock with a piece of rod sticking in the bottom to fit that. That will make it easy to place, secured, and easy to remove. Great idea and very nice.

Beautiful tank Sanjay. I am in the process of building a custom 60gal cube and was looking for a strainer for my CL. Where did you get your CL strainers at?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hey Sanjay,

I’m not suggesting that great minds think alike or anything, but ummm…..

A coincidence perhaps? Or something much, much deeper? :) :) :)

Keep up the great work
