50b Sumpless Mixed Reef Build!

Significant diatom bloom in my frag tank and the one in my display has increased significantly as well. I have lengenthed my photo period and have been occasionally ghost feeding coral frenzy in both, so that's prob why. Annoying since I just bought beautiful frags!

The Cerith Snails are going to town [emoji106] . Most people say they don't do much for diatom algae but they seem to be enjoying it.

Got the torch, 3 hermits and 1 cerith out of qt and into the display!

The duncan/Kryptonite Candy Cane have nuisance algae on them that I'm still trying to eradicate. I left the other hermits/snails in there to help out. The two ricordeas do not but I am currently trying to get them to reattach to small pieces of dry rock instead of the plugs/tiles they are on.

My order from vivid aquariums is arriving first thing Friday morning! So pumped! I will post pics of the corals once they are settled in. [emoji106]

Will you keep him on the bottom? Or is that just for acclimation? Love it BTW, I want a torch in mine.
Yea he's staying right in the bottom left corner. I am light acclimating by gradually increasing photo period since it's not moving. But all corals will start on the bottom regardless.

I've got him there for a few reasons:

1. Out of irritating range of corals on the rocks

2. I have very powerful lights for sps so it needs to be low or it will be too much

3. Looks cool haha

Thanks, yea its sweet. Video doesn't do it justice at all. It's purple with neon green/teal tips. This pic kind of shows it better.

It looks awesome there! And I can picture it 3x the size just waving around like a ... a ... Like a torch lol

I think a torch would look sweet hosting a pair of clowns too
One of the reasons I got it, also ordered a purple tipped frogspawn. Hostings not good for either coral but some don't mind, others suffer. It's hit or miss if it harms them/if the clowns will even host it. My first fish are going to be a pair of clowns though, so we'll see! I'm not keeping an anemone due to sps

What harm will a new do to SPS? I have a rock flower but he is not supposed to roam around. I've read that if you pour your clowns down a tube aimed where you want them to host they are much more likely to stay there. Don't know if this is true yet but we will see.

When I think of clowns hosting in nems, I think of Bubble Tip Anemones. They can sting corals next to them and I don't want to layout my sps based on my nems location (which may move at a moments notice btw). SPS are more expensive (usually) and more sensitive to everything, including irritation from an anemone.

I have no experience with rock flowers but I believe they are smaller and less mobile than btas, so would therefore not be as risky. Having said that, I just don't have the desire or room to have one based on my current plans. They are cool though.

As far as the pouring clowns down a tube, I've seen it work. Google melev's reef clown slide, he gets like 9 clowns to host the same anemone immediately. I'm not sure what the success rate is however. I'll probably try it.

Makes good sense, even with the rock flower in my tank I'll probably try to get my clowns to host somewhere else. Will the clowns harm torch or other coral if I have them host in it?

It's hard to say. In general, when clowns host in a coral (usually lps or softies, can't say I've heard of them hosting sps) they will irritate the coral to some extent. Whether simply by frequent contact or nipping or watever. The effects of that can range from mild to extreme. There really is no way to predict how the coral will react.

I am not sure if one coral would be more tolerant than another as far as torch/frogspawn/duncan etc, but even corals of the same type can exhibit different reactions.

I would say, don't buy a coral specifically for clowns to host in without anticipating the possibility that it could ruin the coral. If your okay with taking that chance, give it a go. Torches are relatively inexpensive as small frags and I wanted one anyway, same as frogspawn, so we'll see what happens.

Hmm, well I have the Xenia too, which some don't care for but it should grow quickly enough to out love any damage they may do... The difficult choices lol.

New frags!

Really healthy and on brand new frag plugs. They were dipped and put on fresh plugs prior to shipping (i dipped again obviously just in case). Nothing came off any of the frags and there was zero nuisance algae so straight into the display they went! So much cleaner than my lfs.......

These pics do not do them justice at all, and they are not fully opened /colored up yet. I'll take some under actinics in a day or two when they are all settled in.
