54g Corner Tank good for Seahorse?

I'm getting really bored with my freshwater planted tank, and I'm thinking of converting it to either a clownfish tank or a seahorse tank. I know absolutely nothing about seahorses, other than they appreciate a tall tank.

My tank is 22" high. The two flat sides are 27" each, and the bowfront is 38" wide.

It has 2.4wpg PC lighting - three AH Supply retrofits.

Not sure what else need to be taken into consideration.

Any advice?

That tank would work quite well for a few pair of seahorses. Just remember to buy guaranteed Captive Bred seahorses from a reliable breeder or hobbyist. Quite a few online vendors sell 'tank raised' seahorses, which are net-pen raised overseas. Don't confuse these tank raised seahorses with captive bred seahorses.

Another question. I already have a canister filter plumbed and running on this tank now. Would it be okay to continue to use it for mechanical filtration and also use a hang-on skimmer? I already have both, and my tank is not drilled.

BTW, it's a Filstar XP3 and a CPR BakPak2 "reef" model.

Yep, that would be fine. I run a canister filter on some of my seahorse tanks along with HOB skimmers. I don't have sumps on any of my tanks except for just one of my reef tanks.

I agree with Tom.

I'd run carbon, phosban, and chemi pure (not the elite, just the standard) in the cannister myself. Ran a similar system to the one your talking for a couple years and it was good.

If your into planted tanks you could do a bunch of macro algaes. Reefcleaners.org has some cool stuff on there, but you might want to venture out from plants. ;)

I see some planted sw tanks that I love, and then I see others that I don't like at all. I'm so torn!

Ya, planted tanks can be cool or just really lame and look over run. Fine line. I'm just getting into a "real" planted tank, moving away from the chaeto and calupra and into some "cooler" species.

C'mon man, peer pressure. ;)

I'm planning on a 26 bowfront with a pair of erectus and I will be using a mangrove as a center piece with a lot of zoanthids and maybe a pocillapora or two. There is definately a fine line between seahorse tanks and "caulerpa" tanks. Post some pics when you get that thing started
