55 Reef on a Budget

Looking good there adnup. Are you going to put them in the river ,with the other ones? I think that would work out really well. I want to see them in the tank when your done. Ted

Obviously to cure cement. It alters pH. Usually it takes months to leak out whatever they are leaking. Some cure them in dilluted vinnegar, or HCl. However if sand used in making of rocks is aragonite, acid will dissolve it.

One note on river-curing. After a while rocks will be populated with bacteria and organic junk from the river, so boiling them afterwards would prolly kill all the junk in them. Later curing it in SW for a couple of weeks would be nessesary. ...just my opinion.

nice job on the diy rock! i cant wait to see it in the tank. i never gave it much though to make my own before. very innovative.

The rocks looks good! Agreed with TekCat - would you only be curing them using the river? I think it would be better if you wash the rocks with SW. Then, leave them to soak in SW for some time before using it.

very nice job so far:)

......but i have one question, in the beginning you said you wanted more than your 90g.....why not sell the 90g set-up tofund a larger tank DIY ?

Right now my only option is the 90 in my living room(4' wide). I have plans for a 6' wide tank where my TV is and putting a plasma above it  on some sort of lever system to lower it infornt of the tank when needed.

I have made ALOT of rock so I was thinking of putting some out in the gulf for awhile. Not sure of the laws and such here in Florida

Finally! I did some work on this project.

I made the doors for the stand today. I am NOT a furniture builder nor have I ever made doors before. So I know they are FAR from perfect but they will work. I still need to sand and fill my mistakes and the left door is alittle warped.

I used the same white pine 2 4x1x8's and 1 2x4 peice of luan. $6 for hinges at HD. And the best thing ever, a Kreg pocket hole jig $28 at Lowes. The pocket hole jig made it soooooo easy to put the doors together.

I still need to put the bottom trim back on and the stand will be done accept for a finish.

Here are some pics

adnup,

Great stuff. I've been following this thread for a while. I have based my stand for my first setup on your design. With the 2x4's, how much space under the cabinet did you end up with? I can't tell from the picture but did you use the Laun to trim on the inside or is that used for the sides, and did you paint inside as well?
How is the CL holding up? Was the glass cutting saw worth it?
I'm still a little gun shy about making that leap, but it sure makes for a clean running system. Is that a MJ mod that you have attahced to your CL return? Fantastic idea. Like I said, I'm a little chicken so I'll stay away from cutting my glass, but I'll definately use the mj mod and will try to get a swirler working with it.

Blutowski -
There is 38" in between the 2by's. I have a sump under there with only takes up about half of the space.

Yes I painted it white inside.

Yes the hole saw bits were worth every penny! I've drilled a couple of other tanks with them as well

No there isnt a mj mod in the tank. I did one but with a 1200 and is too powerful for this tank. I do have 2 600's I plan to mod

adnup, it looks like we have a challenge here. I'm working on building a thread for my 75g tank for as low cost as possible. So far, you're beating me a little but because I don't have the tools to build my own canopy and stand, so I had to drop $100.

Well I'm gonna have to make a canopy this weekend because I just scored another "Freebie" A 12" Snowflake Eel :bounce2:
Heres a pic of him. I always wanted an eel but didnt want to put one in my main tank so this worked out great.

Not a great pic but he's hiding trying to figure out where he is.....

That guy I got the other 55 tank off of the other day, gave them to me. They are bright, add nice color to a tank. He got them from the gulf, I think he said off the Anclote....
