My Mom has a 55Gal reef tank and we were wondering what the max lighting for her tank would be. We have 2 250W metal halides we were wanting to install in her hood but were not sure if that was going to be too much lighting for her tank. She doesn't want to get in to chillers and stuff like that but does want to do some clams and stony corals. Do you think if we had dual fans circulating the air in the hood she would be ok, or is it just too much and will cause heat issues?

I have always used 250's over my tanks and have never had an issue with heat. Just make sure the canopy is as open as possible on the top and back and keep the lights at least 6" off the top.

Depends on tank dimension, depth mostly how much light you need along with which corals you want to keep...watts per gallon is a weak way to describe light requirements so are lumens, its all about PAR watts and Spectrum, if those two are correct, you will have great growth
