5g Marineland Portrait Build

Hello everyone!

A little background for me...

I joined this forum around 4 years ago when I first set up my very first saltwater aquarium. I had 0 experience and huge expectations haha. Needless to say I have had many failures and a few successes but I felt like I was always loosing the battle in my tanks to algea and poor coral health. Eventually I needed to take a break, then another break, and yet another break from the hobby.

The break ends here!
I decided to get a little nano tank for the computer desk, especially since the wife would kill me if I tried to set up a big tank again after selling most of my bigger equipment. :headwally:

Then plan is to run a little reef and keep mainly Zoas, LPS, and SPS.
So I got the tank in the mail yesterday, set it all up, and it is not starting its cycle using Seachem Stability. Still had some old equipment boxed up in the closet like my DIY temp controller, Hydor ATO, some heaters, rock(that I started cleaning and baked in the sun for the past 2 weeks) and other random things.

I already ordered a new return pump to replace the weak 75gph pump with a Rio 600(200gph). Figured if thats not enough still I can use the stock pump in the display.

Once the cycle is complete I plan on ordering a Kessil A80 to replace the stock LEDS on the tank as well and I feel like thats all I really need to upgrade.

So wish me luck and of course here are some pictures!
(Sorry some of the pictures are sideways, not sure how to fix that..)

My main focus is the coral but i have given some thought into the live stock. Just havent decided if I want to do inverts only or get 1 perc clown. Not 100% sure if a perc would be too much though for 5g but im okay with doing frequent water changes and monitoring the food. Other option is getting a small goby with some inverts.

However...I have always admired drop off tanks and I was going to build one but I got a good deal on this tank so I had to get it. I am about to sell my 55g freshwater set up though so I may build one after I sell it if this tank is going well,

I do like the idea of shrimp and maybe an emerald crab though.

My wife likes the fish and I like the coral/inverts

Oh yeah forgot about those gobies, perhaps a pair of yasha goby, or a yellow/green/black clown goby, or firefish

hahah wife just got home from work and I was telling her 2 clownfish in this small of a tank is not too feasible and I suggested just shrimp and she said no before I could even finish my sentence. Sooooo...I'll probably end up getting some shrimp hahah. If I did get clowns it would definetly give me a reason to build the drop off tank later on though. Anyways, I got some time for all that. Finish the cycle first, upgrade the light and grab some corals.

I will keep posting on this build though as new things come up. Open to any and all suggestions as well.

New pump comes in today hopefully will be there when i get home. I decided to add some live sand to the tank last night. Think i may go pick up a peppermint shrimp today also and see what else i see. Ill take some pictures when i get home of the sand. Tank was a little clouded last night but all clear when i woke up this morning.

Happy fathers day to all the dads out there.:celeb1:

Thanks man. I got home so late last night ill try to post some updated pictures when i get home from work..
If anyone has any tips for Nanos feel free to share.

Here's a tip for nano tanks...dont over do it in terms of overstocking with fish, inverts, and coral. I'll share a pic of my nano when I get home from work later

....cause sometimes we just get carried away and if we see something, our first thought is immediately "I want to get that!" And not thinking about the size of our tanks.

Here's me getting carried away a.k.a. impulse buying. Don't worry people, I'm getting a 65 or a 75 gallon aquarium soon/future.

Why would you do this? Puting any fish that is use to open water swimming even if its tinny is a poor choice. I would love to have a fish in my 3gal tank but we as reefers need to make the best choices we can when it comes to the life we keep in are tank's. Othere then that your tank looks awsome.

Meh, still nothing new to update on. Tank had its ammonia spike, now on nitrites. Just an ordinary boring cycle. lol

gave some rock rubble to a friend today so he can frag me some corals and in a couple weeks when i get a better light they should all be healed and growing and ready for my tank.

Another friend is supposed to be bringing me one of his kessil lights that stopped working to see if I can find out whats wrong with it so if I am able to fix it I may use that even though it will be beyond overkill. I'm pretty sure it is a 160 but I may be wrong and he have a 360. I was looing into the A80 for my 5g originally. I figured if I can get it to work thats just more money for coral and I can keep it on its lowest setting. Or maybe money for the controller.

Anyway I'll keep this thread updated on any changes or new ideas. Look forward to finally putting some life in this bad boy hopefully sometime this week once these nitrites go away.
