Some good questions here. The recommended time for ICH to cycle is usually 6 weeks at 80 degrees IMO, I would go 8 just to be on the safe side . You can raise the temp of your display tank and QT tank to speed up the cycle as long as you dont have anything that would be affected by the higher temperature. 82 degrees is the recommended temperature. Anything over can be harmful to the fish.

As far as treating with copper before adding to tank, many people would say yes. IMO, I would find out from the place you purchased the fish if they treat their tanks with copper. If they do, I always request they hold the fish for 7 days. This gives the fish a 7 day copper bath and gives you a week to see if the fish is eating and is adjusting to tank life. Many fish stores will agree to this process and recommend it as well.

If it has, before I purchased the fish I would ask to see it eat, and have it held under a light to see if it has any signs of parasites, diseases or injuries. If it appears OK , I would put it into the display tank right away to reduce stress, and to try and get the fish eating as soon as possible.

Many people will say always treat them in a QT tank first. I never buy a fish from a store that doesnt treat their tanks with copper.

ok thanks.
I have kept my display and QT tanks both at 82 degrees for past 5 weeks.

my LFS is a 2 hour return drive so its a ways away.It also has such a quick turnaround time for fish that holding for a week isnt really a viable option. I Bought a fish from there swimming healthy looked good and eating, the next day at home he started devolping the white spots. This was the fish that introduced ich into my tank. Looks like a copper QT is the easiest/best solution.

1 more question : how is a tang going to fair in a 20G tank for 2 weeks? Its not so much that i cant afford a 4 ft QT i just have no where to put the damn thing.

Thanks!

The tang in a 20 is a problem. The stress of keeping it in a 20 will make it susceptible to ich, even after keeping it in quarantine. I had the exact same problem, I opted for a quick fresh water dip and put him right into my DT, a big gamble I got away with, I don't know if I would recommend that to anyone else.

Actually the 99% solution for leaving a tank fallow is 11 weeks. It is true, however, that higher temperature reduces the time since it speeds up the reproduction/life cycle of ich. There are some fish which do not do well with copper. A QT tank should be used for quarantine and not for treatment. A separate tank for treatment is best practice.

ok thanks for the replys.... so a 1 1/2 -2 " tang wont be ok in a 20G QT for 2 weeks until he can go into the 120G display??

are tangs not one of the most prone to ich fish?? So im screwed if i do and screwed if i dont..... shy of putting a 55G on the floor of my closet which is carpet over concrete i have literally nowhere to put a 4' tank

Actually the 99% solution for leaving a tank fallow is 11 weeks.

What percentage would you say for 7 weeks?

11 weeks seems like such a long time to be fallow.
