So to get the shimmer effect but not the heat of MH I would like to have LEDs. I've never dealt with them before.

I have a 39W T5 that I will put in there in addition to the LED. I do have a hood. Probably keep mostly softies. Of course trying to do it on a budget.

I would like to maybe buy 2 48" LED strips. What do you guys think of these:

IMHO… at first glance, this light looks like a good accent light or fill light, but with only 35W, it is only good for FO tank. I doubt that the "shimmer" would be very pronounced (make sure the water's surface is turbulent)… If you are dead set on this light, you would need at least 1 PAR38 focused on the one rock you are growing softies on to assist growth.

Thanks for your reply. No, not dead set on these but just curious about the rating and would it be strong enough for a mixed reef aquarium.

I'll keep searching!

A. I'm no expert on anything and know even less about LED lighting than other things
B. I don't know how strict your budget is
C. Buuuut, FYI: Reef breeders has a group buy going on right now for their LED lights. Might be worth checking out.

Im also getting some Reef Breeders, but I wont be getting those for another month and they're more expensive than the S026s

how many t5 are you running? you could add something like this if you are running 4x39w and would have plenty of power and skimmer

i have a tank with the exact dimensions and i am converting a 6x39w ati power module into a t5/led unit. i'll be using a mix of bridgelux vero 10s, luxeon m's, cree 3w's, and violets. not budget but half the cost of comparable commercial fixtures.
