they are considered reef safe, same as the blue jaw trigger and the niger trigger. In fact the clown trigger is reefsafe- as far as corals go, but they will eat invertebrates.
The pink tail and the blue throat are vegetarians, though they will eat mysis. If I add a sheet of nori he tears it to shreds.
Like all fish..........their feeding habits can change at a whim...but for me, he has been a model citizen.

Sump 2 is fed from #1. All water going into #1 is filtered through filter socks...so I really dont envisage it being a problem Chris.
I know there will some detritus always present, but that is what 'pods were made for. In essence they will eat the detritus and multiply in that sump, the eggs and small pods will feed back through the system to the main tank.

Very neat build Paul, looking forward to seeing more. I can imagine you seeing your old tank pics and missing the heck out of it, but if you think about it, a huge reason we start over is because of the challenge

Your tank was really coming along when I was there...
I would love to see some photos of the display area and the sumps, fuge, etc.
Your systems are so well planned, you are an inspiration to others, (including me.)

I am kind of reluctant to post pictures because the system is no where near what I want it to look like.
This is due to several things....
Firstly, since the rock has been stored, essentially in the dark, for 10 months it is devoid of coralline algae. I knew that when I added it to the tank and hit it with the lights that it would algae over. Which it did. I expected the algae to last a few weeks and it is now disappearing.
As the algae goes- coralline is beginning to pop up over the rocks, which is encouraging....however the rocks remain for the most part green covering white. Not exactly attractive.
Another reason is the total lack of corals. I really dont have much in there at present and what I do have is just thrown in there without much thought as to growth pattern and actual position I would like to see it in.
So....thats why no new pictures.
One thing I have noticed as well, the new design of rock work does not lend itself well to photographs. With the arches and pillars I have there is lots of swimming space. However, I have yet to take a picture that actually shows the "size" and shape of the constructs I made. Hopefully with growth of corals this may become more apparent.
With regards to the equipment room, that is coming along nicely. I have the frag tank set up and running. The refugium is absolutely teeming with mysid and copepods and the skimmer is doing its thing.
Essentially I have one side of the room done. All that needs to be added are the mangroves for extra nutrient export. I will be acquiring these soon and building a mangrove filter to house them.
The next steps on the "fish room" are the design and testing of an evaporative chiller. This should be a fun build - but more on that later.

Seeing a tank morph from the beginnings to what it is later is interesting, plus it is encouraging to those that are new to the hobby to see even someone like you having to deal with the algae phase.

Were did you get the mysis from? Did you grow them out or buy them live and dump in? I haveplenty of copepods & amphipods you could BBQ but no mysis that i've seen. It would be cool to try raising them. And if you would like some Coraline scrapings I have a beautifull Red coraline that is doing well for me. Hopefully it will take over the rock work soon.

Chris mysis appear, as if by magic. They are in and on live rock and will fluorish in a well set up refugium.
My fuge has a pile of rocks for pods and mysis to grow in and on as well as chaetomorpha. The chaeto not only pulls nutrients from the water but acts as a base for microalgaes to grow on. These feed the pods and mysis.
Under that is a layer (1 inch thick) of crushed coral. This acts as a home to pods and shrimp as well. Under that is 8 inches of sand for denitrification.

That is also how I have mine set up to the exception I have a divided section for mangroves. I have pods by the millions, but hadn't seen any mysis, "doesn't mean they're not there" I find new things daily as I'm sure you do aswell. I need to come up and see it now that there isn't the infamous "Paul & Ed fish" swimming in it. I wasn't sure if you bought the mysis live some where. Always trying to keep the diversity up.

Ok...
Im beginning to like what I have done with regards to the tank. The right side looks Ok to me, but I want to rework the left a little to make it more expansive.
Anyways.......heres a few images.
The corals are not in their final growing places....but that should get corrected real soon. The algae is clearing and the coralline is growing.
