You may have---and probably -- already said this, but i dont remember. ;)

My cousin has a 600 gallon saltwater in california. Its all glass and took 12 guys with the glass holders to move it and then they could barely lift it on its stand. He had to personally weld a brand new stand out of metal framing to hold the tremendous weight of it. None the less it weighs close to 8000 pounds with water.

Before we get too carried away on somone else's tank can we at least get the side shots of the tank?

The sand is in and enquiring minds want to know!

Wow! Can't believe that I possibly missed this one!

You've got a great set up going. Good thing you are a martial arts instructor, you can wear the mermaid costume as often as you want.

So how far are you from Dallas? Once this thing is up and running for a year I'd love to come check it out.

Ok, here are the pictures you wanted.

First off, from the side...a view of the returns on the bottom. You can only see three of them, the one closest isnt in frame. They dont align since the rock work will cut in towards the middle to make a gulley from front to back.

the white bits under the returns are pieces of 1/2 inch pipe to support the return once rock is added.

Now with 390lb sand added ontop....(didnt get very deep did it)

the sand looks pretty yellow, but the tank is lit with my shoplight right now...thats 500W of very yellow light.

from the front:

the water is going in as we speak, probably about another 100g to go. The water is clearing nicely, and warming up.

Paul.

Servo, if you ever in the neighbourhood of Oklahoma City, come by.

from the front level with the returns:

The angle amkes the sand look deeper than it is, it is about 1 inch max.

That looks great Paul!

How much sand did you put in. I know you said 1 inch, but on a 600g tank...who knows how much sand that is ;)

Thanks for the great shot(s) Paul. I can't wait to see it with the rock, and then with the pumps on!

Again, love the idea and planned look. Hope it turns out as planned.

Paul, what kind of sand is that ??

Thanks shawn... I completly missed that. Sorry for not reading that paul.

I was wondering ehat kind of sand as well.

Its a mix of Southdown (actually Yardright, 4 bags) and a caribsea (really fine mix-4 bags) and some old southdown out of my current tank.

I will be adding 3 more bags of aragamax select in the next few days.

why do you have three or fou return lines coming into the bottom of the aquarium? is that part of a closed loop? sorry, i donnot have time to read through all pages of this thread.
are those returns stopping right where you have them now, or will they be extended or something?
very nice tank. i just dont understand the return line set-up. can you explain your thought on this, or refer me to the post that expains it.

thanks

i'm not a big fan of ruturn lines coming into the bottom of aquariums like that because it seems like you are relying on check valves to prevent your sump from overfilling. Is this correct? are you relying on checkvalves?
check valves fail, especially once they get some slime and crutyness worked into them. do you have some plumbing worked out to prevent relying on checkvalves somehow? If you ever have to address a plumbing ussue with one of those lines in the future, you will almost have to drain the whole tank to fix it.

am i mistaken about how i am looking at this situation? am I overly paranoid about bulkheads on the bottom of aquariums? lets hope so.

I believe you are mistaken. This is a closed loop, not a sump return.
