I am setting up a 600 gallon fowlr and I need some help with fish. I ordered 400 pounds of rock today. The footprint is 8' x 4'. I need some ideas on fish that are safe with a clean up crew. I want to be able to keep all types of shrimp, hermits, and snails. Is this going to limit me to only smaller fish?

Can you tell me what kind of tank this is? Acrylic or glass and what are you doing for a stand? Wood or Steel? Lastly, did you have to beef up your floor for this large of a tank?

Thanks in advance

It is a acrylic tank. I built the stand out of wood. It is sitting on a concrete floor. Half of my living room is a converted garage so it worked out perfect for my tank. It was one of the reason I bought the house. I had always wanted a big tank. I have had it for a couple of years. It was freshwater then.

My agressive triggers and puffers could not even bother mexican turbos. The turbos are very effective and should be fine.

Are those the ones that are the size of a baseball?

No, not baseball size. However, they are the size of a golf ball. 1 per 5 or 10 gallons does pretty well. Mine have learned to come out at night where they get harassed less by the fish. They can really munch some algae.

Here is what I have done so far. I have added another 150 pounds of rock. I have 550 pounds now. I have also started my cycle. All of the rock is base so it is going to be a slow go. I just made the saltwater so the tank is still cloudy.

The group of dwarf angels is a cool idea...i just think it should be a group of the same kind. Like all flames r all coral beauties. If you dont want breeding pairs, try 3 r 4 different kinds. In a tank that size you should be able to put 4, 5 maybe 6 dwarfs together with no problem. I have two in my 5 foot tank and ive had no problems other than a chase every now and then. Good luck and keep the pics commin :D

I am not to good with the camera. I also badly need to get some better lights. Right now all I have are some cheap shop lights.

Do you think I am fully stocked? The other fish I have thought about added to the tank would be:

Purple Tang
Pair of Golden Butterflies
Pair of Flame Angels

You have a 600 gallon tank, so I think you are ok adding those fish as long as you don't have water quality problems now. I agree that if you get some actinic bulbs it will look a lot better.

I agree, my only warning would be to keep a close eye on your sandbed, it's going to be a nitrate dump. Make sure you stir it up and keep it clean.

I'd look into the new Marineland LED fixtures since you have FOWLR. Would make a tremendous difference in the coloration of your fish.

What did you decide on a clean up crew? Or are your tangs assigned that job?

I have a few hermits but the tangs do most of the work. Since my last update I have removed the sand, which has helped alot on the algae. I am still debating on what lights to get.

I'd go LED, efficient, shimmer, great colors. I am building my own so I can get exactly what color I want especially with dimmers and also how much for FOWLR, softies or SPS, sky is the limit! I'd love to see your tank with a nice 20k color to it, that would make a huge difference!

I am fixing to pull the trigger on a couple TEK 8 bulb T5 fixtures and need some help. Which bulbs should I get to help pull the fish colors out more?

Have you gone over to the lighting section of Reef Central? I'd read up there, you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about lighting AND MORE.

I like 10,000K lighting for fish, with maybe 1/4 of the total lighting being some sort of actinic 420 or 460.

I finally have got some lights. The UPS man just dropped off 2 - 48" 8 bulb tek fixtures. I can't wait to see what the tank looks like when I get these running.
