6000 or 6100?

Hi Roger,

I know you get asked these type of questions all the time, but I just want to make sure I get the right stream. I'm setting up a tank that is 72" x 23" x 22" high and need to know whether to get the 6000's or 6100's. I'm going to be keeping a mixed tank with little or no sand. Tank has center overflow and I will probably set up the rock as 3 islands. By the way, how is the availability on the streams?

Thanks

What do you plan to keep in your tank?

I originally purchased two 6000's and later upgraded them to 6100's. The cost of a 6000 and an upgrade transformer is the same cost as buying a 6100.

Ditto. I would suggest ordering the 6100's right off the bat as well. You can always throttle them down via the controller.

In general I think we are down to know more than 2 week wait and many places have them in stock. We just got a shipment that should restock everyone who is out. A 72" tank that leans more toward SPS and favia and leathers-6100's. A 72" with lots of xenia, colts, euphyllias-6000's.

(Not trying to hijack the thread) but what about a 120 gallon tank? I currently have a 39 gallon that is running 4 maxijet 1200's and would like to upgrade to a 120 at some point. I wouldn't mind getting some Tunzes to run in the 39 in the meantime (if I could throttle them down as suggested). I could then go BB in the 39 and the 120 will definitely be BB. BTW my tank is a mixed tank and the 120 will be primarily SPS with some LPS and ricordia towards the bottom of the tank.

I was thinking the 6000's beacause the extra $200 is hard to swallow the $700 for two powerheads and a controller is bad enough.

I think what he meant is, its better to get the 6000s now then upgrade to the 6100 transformers, that way you end up with extra 6000 transformers for the same price it would cost you to get 6100s from the start. Get it?

6100- $333

6000- $260 + 6100 transformer- $72- $332 (and you have extra 6000 transformer)

So a converted 6000 is completely, 100% a real 6100? No compromises or tradeoffs? Totally the same?

Why would everyone NOT do this? With the current price structure you would be giving up the chance for a spare, backup transformer for free if you went straight for the 6100's.

Granted, you would not have a 6100 for a backup, but if something happened to the 6100 trasformer, you could use the 6000 until you got a replacement.

Definitely worth the peace of mind and could save some corals if you had a transformer go down.

Yep, purchase a 6000 and an 6100 transformer and it is a full fledges, no compromise 6100.

That's what I did and always suggest others to do.

I see where you're going with that. It makes sense.

The problem for us is that we don't want people too be upset if we advise too small, so we do this on purpose but given that it can be hard to find the large transformer sometime, I don't advise doing it if you know you need the bigger pump. It is the same reason the 9010 and 9015 only have the price difference of the cost of the bigger skimmer cup.
