6055 or 6085 controler or no controller

Roger,
I am in the market to get 2 pumps for a 72 gallon tank. You told me to get the 6055's. I am wondering if it would be worth while to get the pumps that are not controllable. It is $100 difference. Also I was wondering if you think non-controllable pumps are alright, should I get the 6085's because they are not that much more.

The 6085's will be too strong most likely and with no way to turn them down I wouldn't recommend it. I still think the 6055s are the best option, they are physically smaller and controllable which adds a lot of versatility. The 6065's would be the second best option but I would almost rather buy a single 6055 and get by until you can afford another if it is a budget issue.

So we are looking at $225 a piece. Why wouldn't I just keep it at the max at all times. Thats are the controllers can do? I am just trying to decide if I should just go with the pumps minus the controller.

They have been on sale with most vendors this summer for $203 about. Without a controller you can still set the speed, with a controller you can set two speeds and pulse the pumps and with the 7095 or 7096 you can also alternate between pumps.

I'm sure the 6085 is a fine unit but the controllability is priceless. There's nothing like having the ability to tweak and fiddle with flow rates. Here's a bad pic of my 90RR with (3) 6055's on a 7096 controller. Depending on your rockwork, return pump,etc, you may need atleast (2) 6055's
