6055 - Shaft came out

Roger,

I cleaned one of my 6055's yesterday. I couldn't get the drive unit (propeller part off the shaft. It came out about 1/4 inch and then stuck. With a little effort, I was able to pull it off, unfortunately, shaft and all. It seemed that the shaft had seized to the drive unit. I'm guessing that it must have been spinning that way for some time b/c it was working before I took it out. I have since managed to get the shaft out of the drive unit.

Everything is still soaking in vinegar water to break down any buildup.

I know that the shaft is supposed to be fixed in the unit. Can I put the shaft back in? Any other advice?

Thanks

Quite often in this case the shaft can be reinserted, grab the end to be inserted with a pair of pliers, the goal is to squeeze some teeth marks into so it really grabs in. Be very careful not to put teeth marks in any other part of the shaft. Line up the shaft and press it in by hand. Ideally you would use a hydraulic press to seat it completely but you can use a small tacking hammer and lightly tap it in, when completely seated it should be nearly flush with the top of the hole, only 3-4mm will stick out above the top of the well for the drive unit.

Thanks Roger. I was able to get it re-seated. It seems to work fine, but it does have a bit more vibration and noise, especially when it cycles up to full speed. When it ramps down, it's not as noticeable. Is this going to do any long term damage to it?

Also, I took my 9010 skimmer out today for cleaning. I run it in my display tank (no sump). I noticed that the magnet inside the tank is showing some rust along the seam. I was just going to swap the inside/outside magnets. Can I reseal the magnet?

It should work itself out, the shaft is likely not perfectly straight but the centrifugal force will center it in a day or so.

Don't reseal the magnet, give me your info and we will send one, temporarily you can reverse them.
