6055 vs. 6101

Hi all,

I am currently setting up a 3x2x2 tank (approx 90g) and wondering whether I should buy 2 x 6101 on a 7095 multi controller or 2 x 6055 on a multi controller

I like the idea of the extra flow from the 6101's but dont know if I can justify the additional money (approx $400AU)

Do you think 2 x 6101's is overkill in a 90g tank?

The real question is, what do you plan to keep? If it's SPS, most will recommend going straight for the 6101's as it's hard to get too much flow. If it's just LPS/softies, you could likely get away with the 6055's, although you might slip in a 6025/6045 uncontrolled somewhere in the future to hit any dead spots.

The intention with Coral is to have a go at SPS, but also keep some clams and a few softies here and there

I was also potentially thinking 3 x 6055's but that would then be about the same price as the 2 x 6101's and i would get more flow from the 6101's

It deends on what you want.
You could go two 6101's and they will be more than sufficient.
If your using a multi on it as well you will be able to create some nice flow situations. The 6055's are also an option, not as much flow but will be sufficient enough depending on how you set them up.

If you dont mind the appearance of the larger units i would use them, or you can hide them using the stream rocks. If you want something that isn't a visual distraction go for the 6055s. If you want to add more flow , just add an extra. At least that way you may have still less flow, but if will be produced from three different directions so you could create a better flow throughout the tank.

The general pricing on the 6101 is around the same as the older 6100 units. There are readily available at the moment, but the 6055 units are still in high demand and supply has been fairly low.
