6080 working intermittently

Hi Roger,
I have two 10 year old 6080s. Just replaced the impellers a little over a year ago from parts on tunze.com. One of the pumps I havent used much, just sat in the tank without power. Now a year later I've recently been using it and sometimes it doesnt start or it just shuts off. I did a quick check and didnt find anything stuck in the shaft.

Any ideas?

THanks!
Bryan

When you changed the drive unit did you change every part (remove the old bearing and o ring and the collar at the top)? A common issue is if one of these parts does not fit right the brakes will engage and stop it, but you will still feel some hum or vibration from the motor. If their is no hum or vibration, the motor is the problem and it has some electrical damage and cannot be repaired.

No I was told the parts I needed were the drive unit and the hydro propeller and nothing else. It makes sense though as when I took it out of the water and removed the collar and pulled on the drive unit and propeller a bit it would then work. Then I'd reassemble and put it back in the water and it didnt always work. I dont know if its humming and will have to check when I get home. I fear I may have damaged the unit beyond repair not knowing I needed to replace more parts. Is that possible?

Oh I see. I think I replaced those parts b/c I installed everything that came with the new unit. And everything from the old set was bad anyway. So aside from checking if its humming (I dont think it is) or a dead unit, or buildup inside the shaft, anything else that could cause it to function like this? I know with my skimmer pumps of a completely different brand after awhile the magnetic part of the shaft warps and prevents it from spinning completely.

If the new magnet rotor did not fit tight we could rule out a swollen motor coil or damaged rotor, if either was the case you would have to force it. Are you sure you removed the old bearing and o ring and don't have 2 installed? You would have had to pull the old one out with small needle nose, a hook tool or a screw.

no, i'm not sure at all  o so just got home and the unit it warm, the empty shaft is hot inside. I dont see anything in the link. Looks like two videos but they dont seem to work. How can I learn to do this right? Needle nose at the bottom of the shaft? I can't remember if I removed anything at the time when I replaced the units.

The link is just to the part, you may need to cut and paste it as RC seems to cut long links, the part in black is important to the link, or just search 6080.600 on Tunze.com. If any more than just the white shaft is above the hole in the pump, something got left in.

Thanks Roger. I see the part when I search for it. Now I dont remember if I took out the old one and replaced it. Maybe it pulled out with the old part. I do know I dont think I have a tool that can reach down in there and pull anything out. But from what you said I dont think anything more than the white is above the pump.

Also I was able to get it to work. I took off the top cover and, with it plugged in, gently nudged the shaft and it starts spinning. put the cover back on and resubmerged it.

based on that does it sound like it could still be the brake engaging b/c of the existing parts still in there?

That would be a brake related issue, it could be the o ring is not under the bearing at the bottom of the hole, or the collar at the top of the hole is not in all the way or just everything needed to be pushed in. The brakes should stop it from spinning backwards and correct the direction but should not chatter or seize the propeller.
