6105 Shaft Broke?!

I purchased 4 6105's back in April this year. I took them out the tank today to clean them and one of the alloy shafts fell out of the pump. I'm not sure how that could happen. What do I do?

This is interesting I seem to have had the same thing happen. One of my 6105s stopped working and when I opened it up I only see a half of a shaft in there, I guess the rest flew out of it. ? I will PM you with details Roger I need to get a replacement.

It sounds like you may just have a new pump. Since Nov 2011 the shaft is permanently fixed in the motor and not removable (if it is forcibly removed the pump is destroyed) and it only rises to about 1/4" below the top of the well the drive magnet rests in. On pumps prior to that the shaft spanned the full length and was removable and had a silicon bushing on either end and it sat in a socket in the front and back cover.

What the original poster described was a shaft of the new style that sheared off at the base and fell out.

Oh okay. So the shaft is not supposed to extend all the way. I had not removed it yet. The problem is that the impeller itself was stuck I guess -- I should be able to turn the prop by hand right? The symptom was that the powerhead had stopped. The power supply had power. I tried swapping control cables which didn't help. I opened up the power head and found I could not turn the impellor by hand which with other brands only happens when it is stuck. I had a hard time getting the impellor out, it seemed to be back inside there a ways, and the impellor shaft did not come out (now I see that is okay but thought the shaft was broken). Any ideas about this? I guess I should reinstall the clean impellor and try again but it didn't seem gunky at all either. Other ideas? I purchased from Premium Aquatics on 6/5/2012.

Try soaking the motor and drive unit in 50/50 vinegar and water for a few hours to dissolve any calcium build up. When it is not stuck it should turn by hand with some resistance from the magnetic fields.
