6200 making noise

Got the 6200 about a month ago. It has always made this "chattering" noise. Sounds like air being sucked in and chopped up even though no air is being sucked in. The noise is constant and doesn't wax and wane. At first I thought it was the pump vibrating against the magnet holder but I wedged a piece of a mouse pad in there and the noise didn't go away. Any ideas?

I guess I can if I have to. Was hoping I wouldn't have to do that though. Are you familiar with what I am hearing from the pump? I'm guessing you are thinking it may be coming from the internals?

I think the noise is coming from the brake system but it is hard to pinpoint the source and I want to make sure it is fixed. It could be a broken brake shoe, a broken tab that engages the brakes or a misaligned bearing shell. I could send you a drive unit and you could try that but you would have to hold on to all your existing parts so if it doesn't fix it I can get those and the new ones back to get it fixed.

6080 Making Noise

Roger,

I've had my pump for about 6 months now attached to a Multi-controller, with no problems until 10 minutes ago. The pump sounds like it's sucking in air, when it's not. It's not vibrating against my magnet/glass either. I tried opening up the pump to see if there was something stuck in it, but there's nothing there.

Please help.

Is the drive unit the pump itself that is inside the tank? If you could send me a replacement or loaner I can send mine to you when I get the loaner. I can send the pump without recieving a loaner as I do have enough flow in the tank without it but I would prefer to not have to decrease my tank flow for a couple weeks while the pump is fixed if there is another way. Let me know what you want to do. You can PM me if you would prefer.

The drive unit is the "impeller assembly" because it uses a prop and is different from most impeller assemblies in that it is shaftless we call it a drive unit. Check it out and PM me an address and the results of checking the brakes etc.

Roger, could you post a pic of a drive unit with arrows pointing at what parts I need to check. I understand what part the drive unit is now but I'm not sure what part the brakes are. Also, if you post a pic it will show me what it should look like so I can compare that to mine.

Thanks

Do you have your manual? Page 48 lays out all the parts, 32-41 show dissassembly. I don't have my camera with me and all my photos of drive units existing are from older non Stream pumps, they are virtually identical but the manual shows it better. I can email you a PDF of the manual if you need it.

I took the drive unit out and inspected it. As far as I can tell, the brakes work fine. I held the magnetic shaft and turned the propeller one way and the brakes would come out. Then when I turned it the other way they would go back in. I then looked at the bottom of the magnetic shaft and noticed an imperfection. Hard to see from the pic but it is at the bottom of the pic. The area is slightly raised. It looks to be a manufacturing defect. Could this be causing the noise?

Could be but that is just a soft plastic left over from molding the base to the magnet, if it is the cause it could be remdied just by shaving it down with an xacto knife or other sharp blade.

Roger did send me a new drive unit but it didn't fix the problem. Now I just have to decide if I want to send my whole unit in for repair.
