6255 Stopped working

One of my 6255's just suddenly stopped working the other day. I've tried plugging it into the other's power supply, and no go. I can manually spin the impeller, there don't appear to be any obstructions, so I'm not sure what happened here. What do I do?

I would try the following, try it with no controller if you have not already, check that their is a light on the power supply. If it does not work with no controller and the power supply lights up, their is a motor issue and I would send it in for repair, include a copy of your receipt and a note with current address and phone number.

So I had left it out of the aquarium last night. Went to check it again this morning, checked the power supply, it's got a light, so that's good, plugged it in one last time, vroom, spins right up.

Put it back in the water, won't spin up. It kinda sounds like there is a leak or something? Once it gets wet it won't spin, but leave it out to dry and it does?

From that description here are the main culprits I would suspect.

1) A drive unit issue, basically the propeller is partially seized so the added resistance of water is too much for it. The titanium shaft should be firmly in the motor and not removed. The propeller and magnet should spin easily on this shaft, if their is calcium build up between these pieces that would be a cause.

2) There is a break in the cable, the cable houses 5 fairly fine wires, similar to phone or irrigation control wires, if the cord was kinked or pulled hard a wire could break so the pump works when the cord is in just the right position, being in or out of water is not the real cause.

I don't suspect a leak because outside of the main windings, the wires and circuit board are such thin copper lines that they would be eaten through in hours at most by saltwater, the pump would never work again. The only other culprit would be a previous overheat caused a distortion in the motor so that a sensor is out of alignment, this would be similar to issue 1, the motor detects resistance that is not really their because of the misalignment of its sensor, even the normal drag of water then triggers a shut down.

Looking at it, the propeller seems very slightly out of alignment. Like it is slightly bent at the end. Maybe I just need a new propeller assembly for it.. Should I take it out, soak the whole thing in vinegar, and buy a new propeller?

Try removing the propeller from the pump and soaking the propeller assembly (drive unit) and motor in 50/50 vinegar and water over night, try it again and see if that solves it. I would not buy a drive unit for 2 reasons, it has a 2 year warranty and very few of these are more than 2 years old, most will still be under warranty. The shaft may be bent or crooked and the drive unit is fine, I would send it in if cleaning it does not resolve the issue.

You would need part 6255.701 and you can order it on Tunze.com, it would ship Priority Mail from Austin TX. 6 hours or so should be sufficient, just remove the drive unit first or the vinegar won't get to the small spaces to clean them.

OK. Took the whole thing apart, soaked everything in vinegar for about 6 hours, took a toothbrush to it, got in and cleaned the inside of the drive unit near the shaft. Put it all back together, put it in the tank, fired up. yay. 5 minutes later, it shut off.

This morning, unplugged it, plugged it back in, it ran, walked over to the other side of the tank, it shut off.

I think maybe it's a wobble in the impeller causing it to think it's blocked? When I take the impeller out and examine it, the prop part looks off-center from the magnet cylinder. Should I buy a new impeller, or is that under warranty too?

I would send it in, unless sand got between the shaft and magnet and ground out the plastic so it can wobble, it is a warranty issue if the pump is less than 2 years old. It could also be that the shaft is the root cause of the wobble and not the drive unit.
