I’m setting up a new 65 gallon reef, what’s the best light for the money to be able to keep a few sps?

What is your budget? Do you want just on/off functionality or fully programmable Dawn/dusk and ability to change color temperature?

I’m just dipping my toes into LED lighting. I was still metal halide until recently. But, I’d suggest looking into 2 Noopsyche K7 G3.

The most common will be LED. The issue you’re going to run into is coverage for the 36” width. You’ll need at least two of the pendant style such as Noopsyche @griss mentioned, but that still keeps you in budget.

Most popular name brands are out of budget.

Noop would likely be the best option however shipping can be hit or miss sometimes. If you want something similar (though spectrum isn’t as good in my opinion) you can look at 2 SmatFarm or or 2 NiCrew HyperReef gen2 from Amazon.

Yeh im looking at more the amazon version for now but your saying I need 2 for a 36 inch tank?

Yes, for SPS, you’ll want 2 for a 36” tank. I have 3 90watt Euroquatics LEDs over my 40 breeder (currently mixed reef) that is fairly heavy with Acropora.

For clarification, the Noops are designed to cover 24” x 24”. So, 1 on a 36” tank will leave considerable shading on the ends.

Yes. Generally most of the puck style (round lights) pendants have a maximum coverage area of about 24x24. Once you get out side of that? You start to get shading at the edges of the tank. A relatively good example can be seen here:

See where it looks like there’s no light coverage (red outline)

I’d look at two SmatFarm or two NiCrew 100. The NiCrew 200 has a coverage area of 36x36 but you would need to ensure it is hung at the appropriate height to get that proper spread (best determined with borrowing a par meter from the LFS or local reef club).

any thoughts on what I should do for a skimmer? Mainly concerned with how far to set it off the wall?
Since the tank is an AIO (All-in-One) I'd see if you could find a nano skimmer to fit in the filtration chamber. I've never had and AIO so, I'm not sure how a HOB skimmer would work with that.
I had an old account but I guess its gone, would be nice to get it back, I think ive been on here off and on for 17 years
Do you remember your old user name? We might be able to recover your old account if you do.
