hey guys, well i've had my nano for about 2 years now, i'm amazed with the mantis shrimp, i was curious, if i could get away with keeping one in a 7 gal bow tank? i've read that some can break the glass, and i'm worried that this might be too thin, anyways, my girlfriend would kill me if i get the carpet wet AGAIN!, all feedback is welcome, also which would be the best for that size of a tank. thanks in advance

A small spearer (maybe P. ciliata) would probably be ok (so long as you maintain good water quality). Small smashers might be a little risky on a glass 7g, acrylic would be better. Do you have access to mantises through your LFS? Other than Peacocks (way too big for the 7g), they can be a little tricky to find in certain parts of the US, though I know a guy in Napa (private, not an LFS) who could probably get you a few types.

You can get a hilarious show from some of the smashers, especially in a smaller tank (I have one in a 5 gal acrylic bowfront), by dropping in an airstone -- one of the cheap blue or green stone types. If you're lucky, the mantis will swim by occassionally and viciously attack the stone. Seems to make them happy, and the only result is a little bit of airstone rubble in a pile under the airstone.
