715 Gallon Reef Tank Build (1300 gallon system)

I got a chance to play with the new Ecoxotic 100w Blue cannons a couple of weeks ago.

The new ones are dimmable and you can wire them to an Apex to Dim them.

The blue cannons are really impressive and will work great for lighting a 37" deep tank.

The white cannons way overpower the Blue - I didn't have a chance to try to dim the white down to get a good looking color when mixed with the blue.

With the cannons you can get cover a 3'x3' area and go 3' deep.

Looks like an exciting build. I really appreciate the details you are posting. Very easy to follow. I'm set to follow.

Another note. Please use photobucket.com to post your pics. Can't see them from tapatalk the way you are posting them.

Thank you for the feedback! Question: are you able to view the pics I've posted? I can see them on tapatalk and online but I've heard some folks can't see them. Please let me know if you can see my pics in the prior postings. Thank you!

Hey everyone, apologies for the radio silence but I've been busily assembling the system. I've silicones several customs cut dividers into the sump. I started using wood clamps to hold the dividers in place:

This was an awful experience because my glue job was quite sloppy. It works but it's ugly.

Next I completed the plumbing the water changing system. That seems to have worked quite nicely:

A couple folks asked for pics of the water change metering reservoirs, which you can see here:

The inside of the reservoirs have float valves that determine how much water has been pumped into the metering reservoir, which tells the system to (1) dump the dirty water (left reservoir) out into the plumbing stack; and 2) to replace the dirty water with clean saltwater (right reservoir):

I'll provide more updates soon! I'm headed out in a business trip this Friday so I plan to write up more info while on the airplane.

In the meantime, happy reefing!

Hey everyone, apologies for going radio silent. The pictures that I posted have been a problem for most people so in the couple of weeks II will be reposting this string and I plan pick up where I left off.

As a teaser, I will have pics and descriptions of:
- custom GFO reactor
- custom biopellet reactor
- custom ozone reactor
- custom GFO reactor
- ozone generator
- inline titanium 2kw heater
- vertex libra dosing pumps for 2 part

I've been quite busy preparing the floor joist, and will have concrete footers added to carry some if the load....

More to follow, I promise. I'm told my new iPhone 5s will enable me to post pics that everyone can see.

Question for you guys: I would appreciate your lighting recommendation for my new tank. It's 144" long, 31" wide, 37" tall. I plan to make it a mixed reef with corals and fish. I would like the tank to have plenty of high quality light and I do not intend to cut corners (i.e., be cheap) when it comes to selecting the lighting. I want to be able to dim the lights and I would like to have some control over lighting color (e.g., dark blue at night, bright daylight in the daytime, etc). I have a Neptune Apex controller.

I'd like your recommendation regarding which and how many lights you recommend, including any suggestions regarding configuration. Currently I'm thinking about the brand new Orphek pendants (apex ready), Ecoxotic 100 watt cannons, or Kessil A360's (apex ready).

Any thoughts on what is the "Ultimate LED"? Thank you for any suggestions!

Also, what do you think about 2-part dosing versus calcium reactors? I like both but to date I'm undecided.

For LEDs, if you're not cutting corners and have an Apex, I'd recommend the Radion G3 Pro. The connection to Apex once Fusion comes up is amazing - you can control all of the channels independently through the Apex, wirelessly.

As for dosing, on a system this size, I think a calcium reactor will be much cheaper, and a lot easier. You'd have to have large tanks of calcium and alkalinity once the tank is mature. With a calc reactor, you can just add on a second chamber as it grows, and you can mix in Dolomite to provide magnesium (making it even simpler). Plus, if you get that great electronic CO2 doser (from Aquarium Plants I think) it's set and forget.

Apologies for the delay but so much has happened in the past month:

1. Installed the Orca Pro III protein skimmer by My Reef Creation.

2. Installed Tradewind's 1HP chiller.

3. Installed 4 fluidized media reactors (GFO, carbon, bio pellets, ozone):

4. Installed LEDs on the refugium and quarantine tank:

5. Set up temporary tubs to cure live rock (Pakani from Bulk Reef Supply):

Next week I plan to order the display tank! And begin reinforcing the floor joists.

I will have more pictures to share very soon.
