While I was outof town my wife suprised me with a complete setup she found on craigs list , and set it up as it was in the other owners house.. I have been in and out of the hobby for 10 to 15 years. Q this tank has 1 in of crushed coral on bottom 40 to50 lbs of live rock and 4 fish, their is and overflow down to what is a wet/dry filter under the stand. The LR does not look to live . The seller said It had been running for a year and a half. I would like to convert this to a reef , how would I go about this ? What to keep and what to upgrade?

alright this is what I would do Take the fish out and put them in a QT tank. Get rid of the crushed coral go with some dry sand and add a scoop of live sand to make it live. Get an RO/DI unit skimmer sump and powerheads and return filter. Not sure what the setup you currently has came with. Also you are goign to need lights if you plan on goign reef either MH or T5. That is where I would start. Also you may want to take the live rock and put it in some storage bins with some water movement then drop it in the tank once you got sand and water in let t cycle and should be good. HTH and gets you on the right track.

what fish did it come with. post some pics when u can. just get a rubbermaid, and empty like 30 gallons into it, and put the fish into it with a powerhead and heater and a small bubble filter (like $5 bucks)...

the rock get another rubermaid empty another 30 gallons and add a powerhead in there...get another rubermaid or container and put the remaining water in it.....then take out the crushed corral, clean the tank or leave it like that...then add the water you had or mix new water with RODI and salt, then pour maybe 10-20 gallons.... then add the rock how you want it, then add the water from the LR container or use more mixed rodi w salt...
then add maybe 40lbs of Live Sand...then top off with newly mixed rodi water w salt...and wait a day or so to clear up...keep the skimmer on etc.... then give it maybe a week or two and add your fish slowly and watch them...id suggest dump out half their water and slowly add some from your tank maybe 2 gallons per day, and then acclimate them to the tank. so now youll be rid of the crushed corral which isnt good, and youll have the rockwork as you wanted it...

Thats funny I guess my wife bought 5-18gl rubbermaid totes to move the rock ,water, and fish in when she bought it . Also got 4- 7gal water totes to move water.
