730g In-Wall Display

Man we have to get this thread back on track! Here is a picture of my 120G Reef!

Okay, to get it back on track, here are a couple of "progress" pics...

I drilled the first 35mm hole the other day in order to gauge the density of this 3/4" glass -vs- bit wear and time needed per hole. It took about 20 minutes and ragged a brand new bit, so I figured I had better plan on no more than 2 holes per bit for this build! :(

Also note the new 80g water heater... The 50g heater was just too small to be able to fill my large Jacuzzi! ;)

is that hole in the back of the glass? how did you drill without using water? did you just drill for a little while and let cool, or did you use a squirt gun and keep it moist?

I use a spray bottle and hit the trigger about every 15-20 seconds, which seems to be just right to keep the bit cool and the cutting channel cleaned out just enough.

Here at the shop we use jewelers rouge, and clay to keep it around the hole being cut. Just have to watch out for the falling glass disk, they like to crack glass hehe.

he is drilling on a vertical piece of glass. (the back panel)

that technique would work on the bottom, or if you could turn and twist that 730gal tank. lol

That hole was drilled on the back, and I'll have numerous holes on the back and sides. For the bottom holes I use plumbers putty to make a dam and add a small amount of water to it.

As "dahenley" correctly points out, putty no work so good on edges! ;)

WOW, its only been 4 days, but it feels like a month on this end. how are things going? are you still drilling holes or have you been busy? just checking in.

I've been crazy busy with other stuff, so I haven't had a chance to do anything more as of yet... My contractor will be back out on Tuesday or Wednesday to finish everything up on and around the stand though, so that will allow me to progress as soon as he's done.

I'll also be finalizing a progreamming project on Monday or Tuesday too, so after that it should be clear sailing where the tank is concerned.

Products are added and deleted all the time by various distributors & dealers, though my preferred supplier still carries them. :)

I've always had very good luck w/ the Vertex ballasts and the consistency in which they fire bulbs, where many different brands begin to get erratic over time, these have not.

I haven't yet had an opportunity to do any more work on the tank, but my new bike has undergone a couple of changes... ;)

I still need to get a M4 Carbon exhaust system w/ Ti mid-pipe.

Bikes looking good! Glad to see you chopped off that fender. Now you need to get rid of that exhaust, its an eye sore :P

Wish it would stop raining here. Couldn't ride yesterday or today :(

I'm adding an M4 Carbon slip-on as soon as I can afford to do so... Maybe next week! :D

It will look just like this one:
