74 gallon tower stock question..

I'm glad you've seen someone keep a Flame Angel in an irresponsibly sized tank and think that justifies one in a 24"x24" space. I've seen small Blue Tangs in a 60 gallon cube, I guess that means 24" is enough for one then! :deadhorse1:
Please enlighten me as to why all guides for keeping Flame Angels recommend a minimum of a 3' tank space and recommend 4' if "24 inches is enough"?
Again, when smaller it'll likely be fine, at full-size, not so much.

You mean the full grown size of 4"? Also, besides LA most other sources list smaller tank sizes than 70g, with the most common recommended size being 30g, with there being a 50, and 60g also being recommended. Scott Michael's Angelfishes and Butterflies book also listed 30g, so again, to say 4' of swimming space is 'needed', well, that is just inaccurate and dogmatic.

It's hit or miss with the Flame. They can be a complete PITA or can be a true Angel. Small or not, I would not do one a 3' tank.

Good thing I'm not ;)

I ended up giving the flame hawk to a buddy.. now my options are a little more open...

Flame angel :).. kidding...

Not sure honestly.. my list is still similar... with a few additions:

Threadfin cardinals (would look neat hovering in the middle of the tank)
Midas blenny
Scissortail gobies
2-3 flasher wrasses
Starcki damsel
Trio of azure or yellowtails
Chalk bass

Not all of course...

I'm worried that the dottyback will cause issues with the gobies if
You decide on them
I think they would be ok as the dottyback doesn't get far from his cave...and from what I have seen of the gobies they hang more in the middle portion of the water column.. the DB rarely goes above the bottom 1/4 or so of the tank....

But definitely something to keep an eye on and think about if I did go that route..

Get three chalk bass. I love mine. They hang out in the open water, but will also go down to the bottom or perch on the rocks.

Anyone know if dartfish can be in barebottom tanks? I didn't think they needed sand.. but LA says the do for burrowing.. specifically blue gudgeon or scissortail

I don't think ANY dwarf angel would be happy in this tank due to dimensions. I've got a Cherub in my 40b which is 36x18x17 and I think it would be happier in a 4' tank.

While I don't care for the cube tanks if I was to have one I'd load it up with several different male flasher wrasses and of course the Midas Blenny. A royal gramma is another good choice for this tank. Another cool fish would be one of the pygmy or possum wrasses.

They do not need sand. They don't actively construct their own burrow. They will use whatever dartholes are available.

Thanks for the help...

What about a pink bar goby? Would sand be required? I know they aren't sifters.. but do live in dens typically... any thoughts?

Do you think 3 could coexist in a 24x24 footprint?

I think they could...that being said, I'm told they can be a little like cardinals and will eventually take out all but their mate. I have an LFS near me that has like 10 in a tank though, and they seem to be doing just fine, granted it's a 90 gallon. Mine are down to two and have been for a while, but I never really saw much major aggression when there were three. By the way, my tank is a 24 gallon tank.
