75 gallon reef build

Lol, again... research! Had I not taken a leap of faith and done some research on what kind of butterfly would be best in a reef tank, I would NOT have purchased the "Threadfin"... As a rull of thumb, any type of long nose is your best bet... Copperband, Longnose, etc...

As far as the angelfishes, a full sized angel fish would probably be a bad idea. For one, they get to be HUGE! I have a pygmy cherub angel in my tank, and she has yet to bother a single coral, and I've had hear for about a year now. They start off small but top off at around 3 to 4 inches. With the flame angel being a dwarf, you would PROBABLY be okay, but that's still a big maybe. I just make sure to keep the tank fed with seaweed at all times since I have the angel and two tangs in my tank.

I really like the copperband also, my LFS has one in their 400g and he doesn't bother a thing! I've seen some pretty big angels, which is why I have been looking into the dwarfs. I know that there are many that are not reef safe, but I think with the flame if I keep hime well fed it shouldn't be a problem.

Another fish that I really like is the sargassum trigger. From what I've read, that's one of the very few triggers than could go into a reef tank.

I would LOVE to have a trigger in my tank... but I'm deathly afraid of them. I fear to my crabs and snails... But I do hear that there are some reef safe triggers. Theres a few threads floating around on here that have to do with reef safe angels, butterflies, and triggers.

My LFS has one in their reef tank, hince where I got the idea from! Its a beautiful fish to watch!

Lastly, I was feeling pretty ambitious, so I decided to take the makeshift tupperware fuge out, and make something out of some egg crate I had laying around. I think I need more Chaeto!

Happy reefing!

Now, that right there, might be able to work inside my sump. New project for this upcoming weekend :D

I'm sure you would be able to find one that you like. I don't necessarily agree with all things that LFS's do though... A lot of what you see in their display tanks can lead you to believe that you can get away with some things that really shouldn't be done in this hobby.

I don't currently have pods in there... But not it would not. That's something that I'm still trying to come up with an idea of how to accomplish.

If you could fit eggcrate in there like that, I'm sure you could replace them with two baffles. Not sure how it would get into your return though...hmmm

Welp, I definitely could. Maybe get some of the expensive coral glue you can use underwater or something for a seal... But in my case, if you look towards the back of the sump, I have the heater laying, so I had to cut a notch out of the egg creat to make it so the heater would fit... I'm sure I could still do it though. As far as it getting to the return, it would just flow over the baffle to the return, as simple as that.

Quick update on the Powder Blue. After a week's treatment of Ich-X and with help from the cleaner wrasse, he appears to be rid of ich! I'll still keep a very close eye on him, but I couldn't be happier with his progess :)

Time for an update!

Well, I had to sadly take the butterfly out. It wasn't really pecking at the corals (too much), but it wasn't letting the corals eat either. Everytime I would feed, it would take the food right away. He was a great fish, but I'd rather see my corals eat, and the butterfly in a tank where he won't be such a little jerk. :-P

In the process of taking him out, I (carefully) re-aquascaped the tank though! Here's a few pics...

I was also messing around with the panorama feature on my phone's camera... Got some okay (low quality) shots, but it makes it look like I have three powder blues, or two hippos! :eek2:

Hopefully the tang police don't come after me... lol

My girlfriend got a few frags at Something Fishy when they were having their buy one-get one sale, and she gave me a star polyp as one of her free frags :) It's been in the tank for about two weeks now and is just NOW starting to open up... I've heard they take a while to open... is this true?

Lastly, I sold the old tank on craigslist to an aspiring new reefer... Hopefully he knows what he's getting himself into! He said this will be his first aquarium aside from little goldfish tanks he had as a kid... so we'll see! Anyways, I was using the old skimmer's pump as my ATO pump, so I needed to find other means to make the ATO work... I hooked up my Aqua Lifter pump to it, and it works SO much better and keeping a consistent water level in the sump, which is making the skimmer work a heck of a lot better too!

cheers

I'm currently using the Aquatic Life bulbs that came with the fixture... I don't see any reason to upgrade just yet when the bulbs are only a few months old. Once I get to that point, I'll make the jump for something better... What kind of bulbs will I go for? No idea... lol. I'll also probably change the color mix up... Currently the bulbs are (4) 48" T5 HO 54W 420/460, (1) 48" T5 HO 54W 10K, (1) 48" T5 HO 54W Purple (I stole that from their site... :)).

I just changed my bulbs from the stock aquatic life to giesemann bulbs, HUGE difference. I love them. How are things? WE NEED AN UPDATE!

The tank's doing very well. For some reason my colt seems to not want to fully open... can't really figure out why. Other than that, things are good. No real updates to report at all... haven't had the urge to add anything to the tank right now, so I'm just keeping up on routine maintenance for now. The tank does need a good algae scrub though... I've got some crusty green stuff in parts of the tank that don't really get touched that often, and by that I mean, they're hard to get to and will be hard to scrub. Lol...

Happy Reefing!

Not too much going on with the tank lately. I got home last week from apartment hunting to find my display tank about 3/4's full... Of course I started to panic right away, and opened my cabinet to find the sump all the way full (the skimmer had dumped almost a whole collection cup back in the water) and my return was dead. I assumed the worst from the get go, and thought the pump had died and let out a few expletives that the neighbors probably heard. Well I took out the pump, took it apart, and it was clean as a whistle and was working fine. Next I went to the outlet/switch box I installed and discovered that, for some reason, the switch powering the return pump took a dump on me. No biggie, I just plugged the return into another outlet and I was back in business. :)

One problem I have ALWAYS had in my tanks is green algae. I really don't know why it's such a problem. I use a API tap water filter for top off/water changes, and the quality of my water is fine. Perhaps my lights are on too long? I run the actinics for 12 hours a day and the days for 8 hours...

Thanks!
