75 gallon reef build

I am VERY pleased with my skimmer purchase. This thing pulled out in less than 24 hours what my old skimmer pulled out in a week.

Excuse the clownfish soap... lol. I also picked up a 10 gallon tank to use as my ATO reservoir, and decided to use the pump from my old skimmer. Just the right amount of flow without making a boat load of bubbles in the sump.

Lastly, I was feeling pretty ambitious, so I decided to take the makeshift tupperware fuge out, and make something out of some egg crate I had laying around. I think I need more Chaeto!

Happy reefing!

Just a tip, soak that float in vinegar plus water every few months or your ATO will either not work or dump a boatload of water into your sump.

Just a quick update. Nothing much as changed with the tank... the auto top off is a bit finicky, I'll have to mess with it a little bit. It tops off a lot more than I'd like it to. After the sensor kicks off, the pump still pumps for an additional 5 to 10 seconds. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get it figured out. We took a trip to Something Fishy yesterday for some supplies... I picked up more macro for my fuge, and wasn't really planning on it, but I also got a school of five Green Chromises. I was never really a fan of them very much, but they had some in one of their display tanks and liked them... I must say, they've definitely spiced up the tank! They sort of fill in all the empty spots and give the tank a lot more "movement" to the eye. Here's a picture I snapped with my phone... they're definitely hard to get a picture of since they're ALWAYS on the move... hence the picture only showing three of the five. lol

We just bought 5 chromis today!

Nice! Congrats :) I think I'm done adding fish for a while. There are still a few little ones that I want some day (like a mandarin) but that'll have to wait. I'll focus on corals for now once my tank is stable. I'm sure adding all these fish within the past few weeks is going to kick the bioload up like crazy.

I just saw you have a build thread! I'll have to check it out!

I love it. Like I said, it pulls on an average day what my old skimmer pulled in 5 to 7 days. Mine is a bit hard to get to run right, but it's not the skimmer's fault, its my auto top off in the sump. I just need to get the sensors figured out.

So a little bit of funny behavior exhibited by my Powder Brown the past few days. At first I thought something was wrong with him because he was always sticking his nose into the same spot of the rock and just sort of staying there. Upon further examination (and experimentation), he seems to be using the power head as a treadmill... lol. In this video, you can see him just kind of gliding along to the current of it. I turn it off at 20 seconds in and he goes about his business, until at 40 seconds or so, he notices that it's back on again. Believe me, I can keep this game going for quite some time... it's rather funny to see!

Has anybody else ever seen their tang, or other fish, do this?

Thats more or less what I wanted to accomplish with them. The tank looked so empty since most of my fish are grazers, and since I've added them, it's a lot more pleasing to the eye to watch.

Hmmm...interesting to see that. Tangs generally like faster action - I hope it isn't using the flow to try to dislodge parasites from (or increase oxygen to) its gills. Regardless, you might see some uncharacteristic behavior from the tangs, as they aren't likely able to "open throttle" in a 75g tank.

Anyway, I hope it is just goofing around, but I suspect not. :(

I haven't seen any other strange behavior from it... he's eating well, no sign of parasites or abnormal breathing... I was thinking the same thing. I'll keep a close eye on him.

Thanks for the constant updates.

No problem.

So the tang seems to be bored of his powerhead shenanigans, he's just swimming freely now. Yesterday I went to a LFS to just look around... but of course we all know how that ends... lol. I picked up a nice healthy looking Colt coral, and noticed that it was already splitting! I fragged off what was splitting (my first time fragging!) and glued it on a rock for the girlfriend's nano.

Here's a picture of the frag...

Frag seems to be doing very well. I was a bit nervous at first, but it seems very hardy.

Also, the past week or so I've noticed that the two middle bulbs of my fixture have been lit, but VERY dim. I knew it wasn't a ballast because both lights are on seperate circuits, so I called Aquatic Life to see what was up, and right away they wanted to send me new bulbs. Wow! Never had customer service that good! After giving him a bit of information, he said he would send out three new actinics, even though I only need two. Thanks Aqua Life!

Happy Reefing!

Pretty coral, and great job fragging! :) And, yeah, if I see something I really like at the LFS and it will work in my tank, it usually comes home with me!

Thanks! Having trouble keeping the frag on the rock though... I've had to glue it twice now, and it's still coming off. But yes, if I see something nice at the LFS, it's pretty hard to pass it up!

looking good

Thanks!!

So like I said, the tang seems to not be messing with the powerhead as much, BUT today I noticed a little bump protruding on his right side a little bit in front of his bone spur. Like I said before, he's eating well, not breathing abnormally... I did a bit of research and couldn't really find any definitive answer as to what it could be. Trying to get a picture, but as you can imagine, it's pretty hard to do so. The lump is smaller than a pea if that helps any...

Gluing it isnt going to work. stick a toothpick through the stalk a little above the base (high enough so you dont rip through and split the stalk) and then glue the toothpick to the rock. the coral will attach itself to the rock over the next few days and then you can pull the toothpick out. youtube fragging colt coral or xenia...
