75 Gallons of Persistence

It will heal!

Just cut it as low as you can and you'll be fine.

I just hate hate hate seeing frag plugs all over a tank. I know that after a few months they are covered but IMO you can always see the unnatural growth patterns where the corals have these perfect circles in their base.

Yes, I agree with you on that. I will cut them - I really can't do anything with these big plugs.

Well, I was a bit nervous about it for some reason, but I removed the new frags from the plugs and mounted them. I tried to get pictures of both, but my lights went out right after I captured the tri-color. Left me standing in the dark! A picture of the staghorn (I think) tomorrow!

I had to mount it at an angle, because there was no good anchor point up on top of the rock. I really like the way it turned out, though. I hope they do ok, particularly once I get my phosphate down to super-low levels.

When I "cut" the tri-color right at the base, the whole frag ended up popping out of the plastic plug. There was maybe 1/4" of coral left on the other plug. I'll examine it closely tomorrow to see if there are any polyps remaining.

It looks good man, can't wait to see it grow out. You have good lights, it should do fine.

I hope you are right! I was surprised to discover that they had PE already just about an hour or hour and a half after the operation. To me that means if they croak, I must be really doing something wrong!

I'm hoping there is enough coral left on the one frag plug to put under the LEDs in my sump. I'd love to experiment with that.

I did start plans,

I took out one skimmer now and replacing it with a smaller skimmer, freeing up more room for me to make a little frag area. :)

I lowered my lights, finally. I've been wondering if this is a little too soon, but the new corals are almost half way down in my tank, and were under 400w metal halides in the store. I think things will be fine. My T5 bulbs are now about 7.5" above the surface of the water. My biggest concern will be heat, and it won't be long before I'll know if I need a fan.

I discovered my first pods today in my sump. I wonder what took so long. I really need to get some snails within the next couple of days. My rocks are starting to look a little too brown.

Figured I'd put up some pictures of my live rock. It's finally getting more interesting, which is, well, interesting. I say this because anything on it would have to have either come up from the refugium, or in on a hermit crab.

The rock:

Ok, and what is this?! There are a few more around the tank, but this is the largest. It seems to have little "polyps" or "nodules" that wiggle in the current. I think it is too oblong to be a baby anemone. A friend of mine guessed sponge. Sorry, it's really hard to get a good picture. (There's one in the center of the first picture, btw).

And, a couple more pics of the new corals - this time the staghorn is included. The colors of the tri-color come out a little better in the first picture.

PE is still good, and the flow is pretty random and rough. The very tips of the tri-color only have PE after lights out.

And just to make sure I'm getting the most out of my paid Photobucket account, here are some recent tank shots. Some things that are a little different from the last round: lights are lowered, center rock is moved a bit to make it more stable, sand is gone (mostly), and powerheads are pretty much how I want them. The black wall needs to be cleaned.

I would say maybe a sponge or eggs. Does it have little holes. I think you should get some cheato that has lots of pods on it. I would inspect the cheato first to make sure there's nothing un wanted. Can to post a pic of the lr in the sump whenever you get a chance.

Doesn't seem to have little holes - at least not that I can see. I have no good idea what it is. It might even be some sort of algae...

Not much live rock. Just one 8lb piece, but lots of critters:
