In regards to your birthday present question, I would say get a better return pump. I know you stated you are using a mag. Get something that is super reliable. IMO, the return pump is THE most important piece of equipment on a tank. For example, let's say you have a power failure and you can only run one piece of equipment. What would you choose that piece of equipment to be?
IME, calcium deposits affects Iwakis and Bluelines very minimally. You may lose a slight amount of flow but the pump is not going to sieze up or anything. And I admit I don't clean my pumps as often as I should. Pumps should be cleaned yearly but I usually let them go for 1.5-2 years before breaking them down for a good cleaning. Now I'm sure you might have problems if you didn't clean the pump for 4-5 years or somehting crazy like that but I know you wouldn't do that.
Another pump to consider is the sequence UNO series. Same as an Iwaki or Blueline/Panworld but much quieter. Although this is a moot point if you are using one of the Iwaki/Blueline/Panworld pumps that do not have a fan as those are already very quiet.
I think with my present setup they all have to much flow. I will look into that line of pumps when I setup my tank on the first floor. If there as good as my Dart then I will get it.
ATM I'm only running a Mag 7, and that is half way closed.
I have a Pan World 150-PS and I love it, had it for about a year and only took it apart once, and that was just to see if any build up had occured.... Nope.
