What are the proper distances if any? or suggestions? Me and sean started building a new hood.

This is my current hood.

I prefer MH bulbs 9 to 11" off the water. They should be equally centered over the tank with a coverage of 2 sqft.

The power cord should be wired to the ballast (black to black; green to green; white to white). The yellow wires most likely wire to the mogul socket wiring and it doesn't matter which goes to which.

The 'extra' socket you mentioned could very well be a "quick-disconnect" so that you don't have to unwire things, but you'd need the male and female halves to accomplish that.

That looks like the same reflector I'm using, Reef Optix? I thought the plug was for Blue Wave ballasts, does your ballast come with the same plug?

I just cut off the plug from the reflector and had my electrician buddy wire it up to my magnetic ballast.

Is the plug in the pic with the wires labeled 1,2,3 the same as the reflctor? The one labled extra female looks too small.

That plug was supposed to go into a matching female socket. Wiring it up directly is okay, but it doesn't allow you to disconnect it easily like it would have before.

Cprowler-It is a ROII reflector

Melev- 1,2,3 got the female that plug into the male connector on the reflector. Where would the 2 yellow wires go?

Progress on the canopy. Thanks Sean

I had to make a big decision since my 120gal upgrade is drifting away. I just won't have the time for it.

I decided on 2x175 Iwaski SE 14k bulbs,2x175 watt PFO Electronic Ballast, 2x110 VHO Actinic,2x55 watt PC 6.7 K.

In hopes of grabbing ever color spectrum this will most likely do the trick.

With this combo I hope to get colors that I only see in others tanks. It stinks when you go to someones house and see a coral and take a frag and bring it home only to look a dull color that doesn't even represent the coral. ATM I have 5-6 Favorite corals I still haven't bought since I know they will look aweful in my tank.

Sorry to take this just a touch off topic but Ross, can you tell me a bit about your T5 setup? Which bubls, how many, what order etc... It's great to hear arconom mention a great looking T5 tank.

I had 3 blue +, 1 Day, 2 Aquablue's. I took out an aquablue as of a couple of months and put another blue + in it's place to see the results. HTH.

I believe the two yellow wires would go to the black and white wires of one of the sockets. The ground should be grounded to the ballast.

Here's the thing that makes it confusing... You have three wires to power the ballast (hot, common, and ground), and two yellow wires to light the bulb. In addition, you have the quick disconnects that have three wires each, instead of only two.

So you connect the power cord to the matching colors going TO the ballast, and then you use the quick disconnects to connect the mogul socket to the two yellow wires. The grounds are rather useless, but you can connect one ground to the reflector, and then the other to the main ground or to the body of the ballast.

That is how I see it.

Thanks Melev for trying to help me figure out this lighting wiring

Ok I'm currently painting my canopy. It has many pieces to it. I painted every piece of wood with the 1st coat. My question, is there a different color paint that I could use to paint in between the 1st and the 3rd?

I know when I go to do a 2nd coat I won't be able to tell what is the 1st coat and what is the 2nd coat of kilz since it is white.

So can I buy a can of some kind of paint to use in between coats?

For example:

My 1st coat is white, the 2nd coat could be some kind of colored paint, 3rd will be white again. This way I know I covered the whole canopy 2 times. It's hard to tell when painting with white what is painted and what is not.

They have a cool house paint I used for my ceiling in my house. It goes on pink and drys white I loved it.

When I paint something, I can tell when it is wet by watching the reflections, and see any areas I missed. Even if you only get 2.5 coats of paint on there, you can always touch up any obvious areas.

Yeah your right, I can always touch up.

I usually work in my garage at night so it's hard to see the reflections.

Ok I bought for end caps for my 2 VHO's I will be using. I see the mounting screws but where do the wires go? Do they just get Jammed in those 2 square holes?

Whats there to hold the wires in?? When I mount those screw to something I guess it has no choice but to stay.
