75g stand design

Im about to upgrade my 55g to a 75g. But I need to build a stand first. How does this design look?

...there will be a front left leg, i just didnt draw it. The only thing im worried about is not having a front center leg. I need the front to be open so I can easily put in and take out a sump. I will be using 2x4's.

you want to have the legs between the top and bottom with some diagonal bracing to prevent racking. That way the 2x4's are holding the weight and not the screws.
 
Mine is kind of like yours except the side 2x4s on mine are notched for the top pieces to sit on to support the weight. Another one was cut to fit in-between the top and bottom shelves. This way it has the strength and the weight is on the wood and not the screws. You may also want to go 2x6 across the front span since there is no center brace. Built mine with a little over kill but I wanted safe over sorry. The stand I did is for a 90 but the measurements are the same.

Does anyone have a diagram of a design but with teh legs between the top and bottom? I am still trying to picture what a 100% solid tank stand looks like. thanks
 
I re-did the design a little...I incorporated notches in the legs so that the top frame rests in the legs, and also added one extra 2x4 to each of the legs.

I had two 75 gallon tanks on homemade stands at home plus 4 at the old store. I did not use a center brace for any of them.

However the four at the store were set up to sit right next to each other two one the bottom and two on the top. Basicly I used a pair of 4 X 6's 8'7" long for the tanks to rest on with 4 X 4 posts under the ends of the 4X6's to hold it up. On the rear of the stand As well as the sides I put 1/4" plywood to help stabalixe everything.

Presently I'm working on a new set up with a custom stand. The top tank will be a 120 gallon and the bottom will be a 40 gallon breeder. Again with the tank on the bottom I cannot have a center suport. The other thing is with the plumbing I will not be able to put plywood on the back to stabalize the tank.

As I progress on this I'll post some pictures.

Thats how I did mine and its rock solid even before adding the outside plywood. With it that way the wood will hold majority of the weight instead of the screws

I like your design Ultra Spikey. I plan to do something simmilar for my 75g but I'd like to build it with the possibility of the 75 going underneath and a 90 or 110 up top.
 
What made you choose 19.5"x49.5" for the top dimensions? I was under the impression a 75g was 20"x48". I figure the extra 1.5" on the lenth is for 3/4" trim?
 
Not speaking for ultra spikey, but a 90/75 made by AGA is 48 1/2" x 18 1/2" in measurement including the plastic trim. Not sure if his is a AGA but you want some extra space so the tank can slide in with a little room to spare. Too small and you could have some possible issues. My top is cut/enclosed to 49" x 19 1/2" for the tank to sit in. Made the canopy just as big to slide over the top of the tank easily....
 
Going with a wood stand if your looking at it as a peice of furnature I definatly reccomend that the bottom tank be at leasr 12" shorter than the top tank. This allows the verticals to sit on each side of your bottom tank and the horizontals for the top tank to sit on top of the verticals.

If you looking at 48" long tanks on top (55, 75, 90, 110, 120, 150) then consider a 36" long tank on the bottom (20 flat, 30 long, 30 breeder, 38 tall, 40 breeder, 45 tall, 54, 65).

ultra spikey - how's the stand coming? are you going to use half lap joints on the back center vertical support or do it as pictured?
 
here's what i've done so far...

...i'm going into the garage right now to work on it some more. I'm going to start cutting the notches in the legs and glue/screw them on.
 
Cool thanks for the update. I'm off to pick up a circular saw. Hopefully this week I'll get some lumber.
