785 Gallon Glass Reef Build in CT

Great build, tagging along!

I am curious since you started up this tank and stocked it so quickly. Did you use water from the 500 gallon system you already had set up? Did you test your water parameters after you had these fish die? Did anything look off?

Also I am not sure if I missed it but do you have any plans on a tank controller? It might be helpful to know if the temp on the tank rises too high or low. If the temp gets too high you can shut off things that are putting out a lot of heat like the MHs.

Keep the pics coming! Love it!

water parameters were fine. LFS sold me sick fish. I used about 300 gallons from the old system. no plans for a controller. I monitor temp with chiller probe and 2x backup digital thermometer.

I'm curious as I'm contemplating a setup similar to yours, but how much noise do you hear in living room side of the tank when all of the pumps are located on the other side of the wall and running?

My wife can't stand the noise of eve the supposedly pumps and fans and this is her biggest reservation with my aquariums (which is why my tank will be set up in a small den area).

Zero noise

new cleaner wrasse is eating frozen which is awesome. pics are from lighting at 1:00 pm. interesting that the corals look less colorful with halides on but photograph much better.

Sweet build! I'm curious that you lost a bunch of fish, but then added more almost right away? Did you QT the next group, or you are going to roll the dice....

I just had one of those moments where fish I'd had for year just died after I added some new fish.

I just ran some through qt, and they are doing amazing.

I'm looking at a build similar to what you have done here.

I know you did glass, but would acrylic be an option?

No QT, just roll of the dice. I hate acrylic because it scratches so easily and has difficult access from the top

yikes, lost power last night and either a surge when power came back on or a lightning strike fried my chiller, microwave, 2 tv's, fish tank viewing room over head light, hot tub, Irobot roomba, downstairs fridge, 4 power strips

Ouch... I recall seeing one of those Mike Holmes shows where they installed some dohicky on the breaker box that would protect (somewhat) from lightning strikes/surges.

That said is this something home owners insurance will cover?

we had a surge protector but who knows why it happened anyway...I did file a claim so it is just a royal PIA, but could be worse.

Had a lightening strike right next to my home three years ago and had a whole home surge protector, surge protector on all TV's, home theater, and PC's but still lost all TV's (six), garage door openers, alarm, two PC's, all DirecTV boxes, all smoke detectors, and refrigerator. Electricity will find a path regardless of surge protectors (ie, HDMI, DirecTV cabling, etc).

You are still susceptible to ground potential rise. What this means is that if lightning is close to you, your grounded systems will rise to several thousand volts. Surge protectors will only protect you if a strike hits an overhead power line and causes the voltage rise on your HOT legs (where the juice comes in). Even so those devices are not perfect, but do minimize the damage that can be caused.

You may be able to minimize ground potential rise by running a dedicated ground (not copper watermain) and using a ground plate or 3 point grounding in your yard.

It sucks to have a surge on your power lines. But, it's better to have a catastrophic failure and get insurance to cover expense than to have latent defects that will show up in a few months to a year or more. Or, intermittent issues.

That's why we pay insurance premiums.

I ordered a new 1/2 hp chiller yesterday. the tank hit 80.6 the other day with no chiller and Temps in the 90 ' s in CT. I am regulating the temp with house ac by blowing a fan into the garage. I need to get the chiller installed before I go away next weekend

just read from page 1...all I can say is DAMN...tht is such a nice size tank. really do love the aquascape and the pieces in right front.

have you just thought about build a simple wall in the garage behind the tank a few 2x4 some insulation and plywood could go a long way. just a thought...

temp is not an issue right now it is under control. I will have to wait until winter to see if the curtain will be sufficient....if not, plan b could be a wall or some other options.
