Is it ok to have 8" high dividers in the sump to occupied a refugium? my euro reef stated it works best at 6-8" of water. My stand isn't high enough for me to elevate the skimmer. is 8" too short for a refugium?
Should be fine. I purposely made my stand taller for that very reason, and I think you will find more and more stands being taller since skimmers are pretty much standard fare any more.
You can push the envelope a bit if you want to and run your skimmer in 9", but realistically, the macro in your fuge will probably get better light penetration and faster growth in the shallower water, though I am sure you are looking at the sump thinking about all that wasted volume. You could make a hang on fuge box inside and divert some of your overlflow through it, or use the space for some experiments like algal scrubbers etc. Be creative
My MRC custom sump/refugium is designed with baffles that high. It's 30"x18"x18" and still has enough room for the extra water when I shut off my main pump.
I like it because it gives my pump less of a chance of running dry.
I keep caulerpa, chaeto, live rock rubble and live sand in my fuge. If you do an external skimmer you could hang it on the side of your sump and make the water as deep as you like.
