800 gallon classroom build

thanks kody

minor setback today - while doing a little glass scraping, i noticed the center brace was completely separated on one side of the 150. i cut it loose from the other side, applied some new silicone and clamped the tank until tomorrow.... hopefully it will hold.

So do the students have to pay a fee or anything?
Like do they buy their own inhabitants etc.
Or do they pay like a $50 shop fee etc.

they will buy their own livestock. everything else is provided. they will be in groups of 5 or 6 for each tank.

I just a bit confused... how exactly are all the tanks going ot be maintained? Do the students each choose one tank and stock and care for it? If so i see some complications:
1. It would be a REALLY ahrd class to get into cus there are only 20-30 tanks
2. If even one of those "unexpected kid" does smthing wrong.. uh idk..throw pennies in the sump or decide to add smthing from home..the whole system could crash

We have smthing like this in our school but there is no sump that is connected and each tank is a different set-up so whats yours..stays your problem not affecting anyone's else's grade..but i doubt thats how your going ot grade anyways

Also what school is this anyways? State and city?

Overall, awesome job..i just hope the students apprectiate and live up to the hard work put into it..

I would have the students and parents sign like the sylabus where it states that anything not approved by you, that is carried out by the students can make them liable for the cost of any supplies, animals, and or time.

nice, last year my teacher ( I was like a student who was "student teaching" ) and she had 3 preps for a brand new class that she thought was going to be awesome, but because she never had 8th graders before (usually 6th) they were really mean, so now she insisted on only having 2 preps, and she is now already rejoicing! lol!

kodyboy- how many preps do you have? and where do you teach?

I have four preps (not counting my college classes in which case six:()
I teach Zoology, Advanced Placement Biology, Team Chemistry, and Chemistry at the high school, and Biology 105 and Anatomy and Physiology at the college...........I think I am going to cry now......
I teach in Michigan, near Detroit

I teach four preps in the high school and we have a modified block schedule so one day I teach all four preps (FUN!) and then the four are divided between the two other days as the students attend four classes Tues/Thursday and then four others Weds/Fri.
I teach the other two classes at Davenport University at night two nights a week.
Oh yes it is soooooooo much fun:) I love teaching but man this is a pain!

dass - since i am the only teacher for the class, the highest # of students could be 180 or so (6 classes of 30) and the students would be grouped 6 or 7 to a tank. i realize your concern of sabotage, but i cant let that possibility ruin things for everyone else. if something like that were to happen, we would just deal with it and move on. the "graded" portion of the class will include the records the students keep on what they did with their tank - no penalties for death of organisms :)

btw, i teach in San Antonio, TX.

kody - i have only two preps, this class and biology (didnt quite have enough students for 6 full classes) sounds like they keep you busy!

Tagging along on this one ... I just called the Mrs. in and showed her the pictures..." I want that" is what came out of my mouth... "Get a raise" was the reply ....

Keep the pics and posts coming ..I am super curious to see how the system develops.. I really am planning a system very similar to this one once I have the space..

Thanks for the effort put into this thread and good luck with everything ...
