800 gallon classroom build

Very cool way to spark interest in a very wide range of critters. Any plans as far as culturing food? (rotifers, phytoplakton, artemia, copepods etc?)

WOW!! i wish my high school had a class like this. Definitely would be my first elective pick. I've been contemplating for a long time to start a aquarium or marine club in my school. I just don't know how i do it. Anyone have info on how i would go about this? Might have to get one of these classes started too!!

looks awesome! I wish I had room in my classroom for a set-up like that. My students are breeding African cichlids (one is attempting bangiis) and I hope that goes well. Cool project, keep us posted:)

still working on getting in student fish. we are at about 60% now, with 3 or 4 fish in each tank. within the next couple of weeks we should have all of the fish in and i will start featuring a different tank each week.

wow, it has been a while since i updated this....

i was about ready to start featuring student tanks when i procured grant money to replace the NO florescent lights with T5 lights, so i will start that when i get all of the lights changed out. for now, a comparison pic of the old lights (20 watt NO florescent) to the new (48 watts of T5):

this is what my students have been working on lately - since it is environmental systems class, we have to study soil. to do that, we built raised vegetable gardens with 5 different types of soil. they will all be planted with identical plant so we can study the affect of the different types of soil.

we had four different types of soil delivered - the students moved it into the raised beds they built after it was delivered

and the fifth is compost from our ag department

here it is after all the dirt was leveled and the plants and seeds were planted

wow, a school with budgeting funds for the advancement of science??? If you didn't post pictures I wouldn't believe it!

It's an awesome thing you're doing. I had a High School bio teacher who mentored me all through college and we still keep in close contact today. She truly was an invaluable resource for my future and where I'm at currently. I'm sure your students look to you in the same light, and you should be extremely proud of that.

thanks for all of the comments....

i am really lucky to have such support from my department, principal and district.

Incredible!!! I hope your students realize how lucky they are to have a teacher like you. I can't get over the amount of work that YOU put into this too.

Seriously, you get an A+ in my grade book. :)

Well, I just received a cool surprise in the mail yesterday! A wonderful thank you card and very useful writing instrument! :D
