Gday everyone,

First time posting on a marine forum! I have done freshwater my whole life but finally seen the light and decided to do a marine tank haha. Thought i would make s thread as i have a million questions and am definately throwing myself in the deep end with this tank. It is 8ft x 1 metre x 2.5ft with a 4x3ft growout and 4x3ft sump attached.

Equipment:

Jns shark sk-6 skimmer
2x jebao rw-20
Laguna 16,500 return pump
Titan 1500w heater
Aqua twist 57w uv
Standard led spotlighting

As for stocking here are the species i have narrowed it down too:

Threadfin snapper
Guinea fowl puffer
Volitan lionfish
Harlequin tuskfish
Bicolour parrotfish
Foxface

bluegrey carpet shark / grey bamboo
Crested bullhead shark
Blue spotted ribbontail ray
Pair mask ray

Miniata grouper
Cheeklined maori wrasse
Pair Crosshatch trigger
Emperor angelfish
Majestic angelfish
Lipstick tang
Sohal tang
Tesselata moray

I jnow as it is that is very heavily stocked so i would love some suggestions as to what i should get rid of :)

Think thats about it... Going to do a cycle using only dry rock to avoid and critters getting in the tank, currently have a little 4x2 quarantine tank set up as well. Any and all help is appreciated!! Ive gone from being an expert in freshwater to an absolute noob in marine haha

Oh and i should mention the stocklist is in that order because thats the order im thinking of introducing the fish. Basically broken it up into fish that will be peaceful towards the rays/ sharks go first and then species that may be nippy will go in after to try and reduce agression

I would consider adding the lipstick tang sooner rather than later

Was told to add all tangs at the same time but that the sohal tang should be added last as it is agro... Should i add both tangs before the sharks?

Sohal tangs are normally beasts , I think it can hold it own no matter when you put in in honestly, lipstick tangs are normally much more passive and also have a history of being difficult eaters, rather than add in when your tank is nearly stocked, I'd add it earlier on so it's already established eating. Just my 0.02

Thats a good point... Suppose i dont have to worry about the sohal not being able to defend itself against the already established lipstick, cheers for your help!!

Any fish that wouldnt work in that list? Or do you think stocking is appropriate? Its hard to gauge at how many fish i can have but too my eyes that looks like way too many

Definitely add that tesselata last lol, they get really territorial with new arrivals and can try to take a chunk out of them

Yup i wil be! Haha... Shame though cuz theres one for sale and they are pretty rare here but im sure more will come :)

I am going to be running the tank bare bottom... Anyone else kept marine rays like this?

I have kept and bred freshwater rays for years and always had them in bb tanks.

my saltwater gets delivered around 1.025, but have been told running at 1.023 would be better as its fish only and that would improve oxygenation... Where does everyone believe the best salinity level is for this stocklist?

Yeah 1.023 would be good for FOWLR. IMO if you have good flow, good skimmer then I doubt oxygen depletion in the water column will be an issue at 1.025. Especially with that water volume. I run my reef tank at 1.0255 and my seahorse tank at 1.023 for that reason and I would probably do the same for a FOWLR tank. Either way you should be okay whatever you decide. How exciting though, good luck with the build!

Thankyou so much mate i am really excited haha... Whole new side of the hobby for me. Think i will bring it down to 1.023... Way i see it is im essentially getting more water aka dont have to get it delivered as often haha

Has anyone got a formula for bringing down salinity? Aka how much ro water per litre of salt water to bring it down 0.001 etc
