857 gallon aquarium

Since you got a great deal on the tank, could you possibly think about cutting the top down to a more managable level? As long as it is built into a wall, Who cares what the top edge will look like, And with the extra thickness required to go to 43 inches, you may not even need bracing along the top. I don't know about all this engineering stuff so someone with more experience will need to chime in, but you may also think about having a local acrylic company cutting the top off and gluing another top on for you to brace it. Just a thought.

If I were you, I would go FO or FOWLR. It will be cheaper (well, except for the food :p ), and you will be able to house fish that most of us would love to but can't. Big triggers, groupers, angels, morays, puffers.

How about this for a show-stopping display, a bunch of big boys with every color in the rainbow...and lots of big teeth:

Clown Trigger
Dragon Moray
Tesselata Moray
Golden Puffer
Miniatus Grouper
Queen Angel
Emperor Angel
Blue Line Grouper
Crosshatch Trigger

You'll WOW people!!! :eek1: :eek1: :eek1:

sorry but for clams and sps you lighting is not going to cut it. My tank is half as big and I have twice the lights you are thinking of. 1800 + watts on my 300 gallon.

Think you might have read his post wrong.
He's fitting 4off units of lights containing "48inch 400x2 plus 1 96watt blue"

ie: Four times this > "each unit will have a total of 896watts"

= 3584 watts

Plus, despite the depth, if the rock structure ends up within a foot of the surface or more then there's no difference in keeping SPS in his tank to any other. From a Steve Weast point of view, there's no point hammering the whole area of a tank with wastefull blinding light anyway, you want 'different' aspects of lighting areas and perception sometimes.

There's more than one way to skin a cat...

ahh

ahh

ahh sorry agreed. there are many ways to do things. Though had it been only one of those with 8 hundred and something watts for that size tank he would not be able to sps and clams but in a few places. 3500 watts sounds like a good start:rollface:

update i should have the aquarium in a month to a month and a half at the latest. i will get pictures up as soon as i get the aquarium.

My suggestions:

Deltec AP1006 Skimmer talk to doug in deltec forum - 1diverdown is his handle

Lighting:
6 X 400 watt 20 K Double Ended HQI Pendants

Returns:
Sequence or Blueline returns

Flow:
2 x Tunze 6200 Streams
2 X Tunze Wavebox's
Talk to Roger in the Tunze forum- he lives here in town with me- great guy.

Thats just my opinion. Lots of good products but those are the best for your application i think.

mf :bum:

thanks for the help mf, that skimmer would be nice but i don't think i will be able to afford $6000.00 to $7000.00 for a skimmer
the lights sound good and the water flow is also a great idea.
if i do come up with that $7000.00 i will get that skimmer but its a slim chance.

update just moved into the new house this past sat, so just getting things together at the house, and it doesn't help that i'm
working 72 hrs a week either, so my time is very limited. i should
have the aquarium in may, he just needs to drill holes and finish the stand. soon as i recieve aquarium i will post some pics.

finally the aquarium is here and is setting in my den i will get some pics as soon as i can. I still have to move it to the living room and its going to take a lot of people.

If you are truly worried about the electric bill (I know that can be rough). Look into solar paneling with a battery backup for your tank it may be expensive up front but pays for itself in the long run. Also with the panels you can be the only one with full power during a blackout. I live in CA and the when we were having rolling blackouts I still had my reef running. :)

I'd go with a huge, mylar-walled skylight with some 400 watt halide "spotlights" and a few actinics for better coloration.
Not sure if its feasable with the tanks' location in your house, but this will take a HUGE load off your lighting bill.
