90 Gallon Frag Tank Build

Well it is time to begin my frag tank. I got out of the hobby over a year ago and my best friend, cozart, has put the bug back in me.

I purchased an acrylic 90 gallon 6' X 2' X 1' tank from a fellow reefer not too long ago. So far I have purchased the tank, EuroReef CS80 skimmer, Iwaki pump, 30 gallon acrylic sump, and some live rock. I have framed out the stand based on some plans I found on RC. Below are a few pics of my progress.

I wasn't going to skin the stand but cozart talked me into it. In addition to what I have already purchased, I plan on getting 3 luminarcs, ballasts with 12k Reeflux bulbs, aquacontroller jr., and another pump for a closed loop system. I am sure I will pick up more along the way.

I hope to get a little more done this weekend. I will post more pics if I do.

That looks really nice I will be following this thread. Do you have a link for the plans on the stand build? Also which Iwaki pump did you buy and why did you go with that one?

Hi Emster,

I got the Iwaki 30wrt??? It is the American model. I went with it because it is a WAKI!! JK I am not sure, I have heard good things about them and decided to roll the dice.

I think I am going to go with 3 250W SE Metal Halides. Probably Reeflux 12k or 14k. Not sure yet. I want good growth but also want it to look nice.

Well IMO Iwaki's are bullet proof pumps and the japan motors are best. The wmd are american made and the md are Japan. This is just my opinion but you could probably get away with 3 150watt halides on that tank.

Well I added a few cross braces under the top and bottom. I also put on the top and bottom of the stand. I plan on sanding (a little) later and putting on a coat or two of white paint. Probably Kilz.

I also got a little help from my son today. He sanded and helped wash my dead rock.

I put a couple of coats of Kilz paint on it today. Hopefully I can grab a few bulk heads this week and begin plumbing the tank.

My wife still doesn't like the stand but it will have to do until I have more time to skin it. I will probably set it up as is and skin it later.

Does anyone know where you can purchase those foam sheets that you put under acrylic tanks?

homedepot, lowes. the pink stuff is a couple more dollars, but it is real nice. runs about $12 or so.

no prob, like I said the pink stuff is easier to work with. Cuts easier, makes far less mess, denser(sp) etc....

Well, I decided to go another route and sell this frag setup. I will be getting a different rig.

I'll sell the tank and stand for $300. I put a lot of time into this. It will come with the 3 step acrylic scratch remover.

The pump is brand new. I wet tested with fresh water and that's it. I will sell it for $70.

The sump I can let go for $75

And I have a euroreef skimmer which is in mint condition. Only a few hours on it. I will let it go for $150.
