90 Gallon Lighting Recommendations

I am in the process of purchasing a 90 gallon (48x18x24). I am wondering what lighting each of you would suggest. I would like to keep softies, LPS, and probably eventually some SPS once I gain some experience.

I like the coral life fixture as detailed in my signature below.
On a timer you can great morning daytime and night with it

I was actually just looking at that setup capn. I was also looking at these

I am wanting to mount whatever I buy under a custom canopy a friend is making for me.

Depends of what you have the money for, but 2 double ended hqi 150's with some pc's would work great... :) They have total fixtures or you could retro soemthing like that..Good luck

What would you buy Veralte if you had $400-$500 to spend on lighting for this tank and you had someone making a custom canopy for you?

Depnds on what you want to keep and what kind of access the hood will provide... If you did something like the above metioned lighting it's hard to beat the coralife setup. I have one of these on a 120 with clams and lps that do great... Hope that helps

I know this is probably a nub question, but what exactly is the difference between a "fixture" and a "retrofit kit"?

A retro is when you wire the lights and reflectors into a hood, while a fixture like the coralife has all that done for you and you just need to plug and play. The coralife can site ontop the tank or can hang pendant style. you'd have to get creative with mounting it inside a hood, but it can be done.. :)
