90 Gallon Upgrade -- This Weekend

I am very excited - this is the weekend I will be migrating everything from the 55G to the 90G. The logistics are challenging since I have to take everything out of the 55G, move it out of the way, clean up the area, move the 90G into the same position the 55G was in, and get it all set up.

This is why I won't be making the meeting this weekend. I received my ASM G3 skimmer earlier this week and the new sand should be arriving today (120 lbs oolitic - I will seed heavily with my existing sand). I have 3 large trash cans (brand new and rinsed) that are sitting in my living room full of fresh RODI saltwater that is heating up and being circulated as we speak.

This will be my first experience with a sump, so I hope that goes smoothly. Any lessons learned out there from those who have done similar migrations?

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Good luck with the upgrade. I will be following along as very soon I am planning the same type upgrade from my 90 to 180+.
I have the same situation with moving my existing tank and putting the next one in the same place. Keep us posted!

good luck! I dunno, I like that kinda challenge:). Late winter I plan to upgrade from a 37g (no sump) to a 75g with an in stand sump

Kevin I'm oncall this weekend. If I'm in the area i could stop by if you need a hand? LMK LOL or juss chill n' play the state worker part and watch.

Good luck Kevin, I hope all goes well. I'm sure its going to be a long day, but so worth it in the end. Hope you can post a few pics when every thing is done.

1st issue of the day -- 2 of the 32 gallon trash cans I am using for water are in my living room (where the tank will be). The 3rd is in the basement. Unfortunately, the trash can in the basement seemed to have a small leak so I had to run out to Lowe's this morning. At least it was the one in the basement leaking and not the ones in my living room :) . Problem solved.

Kevin,

I did the same swap about 2 years ago. I had a 55 where my 90 is now and it was an all night project. Of course I did it my self and that took longer......

It sounds like your on the right track with the RO waiting in the wings. I will be home most of the day (raking leaves) so if you need a had call me. I will be more than happy to help you out if you need it.

Thanks for all the offers of help and support - at this point, I am ready to say mission success. Right now, all the inhabitants have been transferred to the new tank and everything is up and running. Water is still a bit cloudy from the new sand but it has been steadily clearing as each hour passes. The ASM G3 is up and running and is pulling some of the suspended junk out of the water.

Now I am just cleaning up the mess left behind - I even felt ambitious enough to completely clean the 55G tank (much easier to do now as opposed to waiting for everything to crust over). Tomorrow's task will be aquascaping - I wanted to wait for the water to clear up before trying to arrange any of the rocks.

The only hiccup today was a rubbermaid container that had a small leak - I was using it to store some of the water from the 55G as I was draining it. Fortunately, I caught it quickly and aside from a slightly wet area rug, no harm done. The rest was smooth sailing.

I wish I had some celebratory beer, but I am tapped out - time to kick back and relax for the evening. Tomorrow is another day. I'll post pictures soon.

ASM G3 going right to work pulling out all the suspended particles caused by me re-arranging rockwork today.

Nice setup. Tank looks sweet. Glad the move went well. I'm in the process of doing the same right now. Started my plumbing today on the sump. Where did you get the ASM G3 skimmer and how much was it? If you dont mind me asking. Thats the only thing I still need to get. I wanted a Euroreef, but I like the way the G3 discharges thru the foam block, eliminating microbubbles. Is it possible to plumb the G3 to sit outside the fuge??

Thanks Kris.
Hrrrmmmm I'm stumped now, haha. I still havent baffled the fuge so I could technically make room for it inside the sump. Rather have one external though to give me more sump room. Bah so confused on what to do now.

I am very impressed with the ASM G3 so far, but you definitely need to put it in a sump. The "seal" between the pump and the chamber would leak without a doubt.

I got mine on Ebay for $275 after shipping. When searching on Ebay, search using both "ASM G3" and "ASM G-3" as there are different listings for both.
