I'm looking into these skimmers, because I have a limited footprint area for an in-sump skimmer.

Two questions. First, if the skimmer chamber of my sump has a set water level that is higher than 11", can I simply install this skimmer using the brackets to get the water level correct or do I need to use a stand in the sump? And, assuming either one of those is ok, are any other mods necessary or can I simply use it in aquarium mode? Second, I notice the instruction manual says that it should only be in a chamber where the water is calm. Any problem having it in the same chamber as the gravity overflow drains into my sump? Thanks.

You can install it either way. You could set it up in the "in tank" set up and just use the rails to set the height.

I would do as much as possible to clam the flow, possibly add a baffle or add elbows to the drains to direct any turbulence away from the skimmer.
