9010

I just bought a reef system which included a 9010 skimmer, whic is just over a year old. The tank has been up and running for a week. The skimmer has not really been dialed in, but for most of the week it was producing foam.

When I first set it up, and again, today, when I shut it down for a few minutes and turned it back on, it makes noise for a while, then no noise for a while, but it doesn't seem to be picking up any water.

Can anyone help with this?

I would guess that the drive unit is damaged or locked up. It is not uncommon if they are left to dry out with some sand or salt water inside, they crust up and on start up they kind of twist apart. I would start by checking the top thread on driver alarms. Your skimmer pump impeller is made very similarly and the basics still apply. My guess is a brake shoe twisted out of its socket or a bearing is loose or dirty.

With the help of my LFS, we started taking the pump apart, tapped on it and it started running. It seems to be running fine at this point.

Thanks
