9015 too dry

Hello !

I'm from France, sorry for my english...

I bought a 9015 for my 63 gallons. I don't have sump and the skimmer is in the tank.

It works well, but IMO the foam is too dry. And when I get 100 ml (one day) of skimmate, the cup is full of foam (some exits from the top).

The ventury is fully opened.

I've tried to put the DOC skimmer deeper in the water, but it didn't work.

Thanks for you help.

Rémy

Hi Remy,

Yes, the 9015 makes a dry foam. If you want a wetter foam the foam removal set 9020.14 is a good option. I see you are very far from Colmar. It would be worth it to call Claude Hug at Tunze France, he is in Colmar and he can probably give you some advice. I was going to suggest if you were closer you could probably meet with him and he could show you some options. He does travel alot to all the stores of the French speaking countries so he may come by Rennes sometime. It looks like it would be a very long drive though, maybe 6 hours.

Remy, if your water is fairly clean, the foam is dryer. I run my 9015 about 1/2 inch deeper than recommended, and that makes quite a difference. If your foam is too dry, I would recommend running the skimmer as deep in the water as you can that still allows the venturi to pull air with the air screw one turn in. I'm quite a fan of this skimmer, as I replaced a 3130/2 (that was a good skimmer) with the 9015, and witnessed a dramatic improvement in skimming. It is always more of a challenge to tune a skimmer if your tank water is already fairly clean!

i just left the screw off entirely (i assume that would allow for the wetest possible skimming)

Yes, that's the way I used to run my 3130/2, but I always had to put the screw back in when I removed the cup so that it would effectively clean the venturi by sucking water through it. On this one, I think it is getting enough air to satisfy me, and it is more convenient when I clean the cup daily to have the venturi being cleansed automatically.

oh, the screw needs to be in for the venturi to be cleaned?
and it is ok to run the skimmer deeper than the blue water line?

Yes, because when you remove the cup for cleaning, watery froth gets to the internal air circuit and flushes the venturi. At least on mine, if you don't have the air screw in, it sucks air in from the outside, and doesn't flush the venturi as well.

Yes, you can run deepr than the blue water line, but if you go too deep, you flood the internal circuits (you'll know when you go too deep because foam height then reduces rather than increasing).

I'm running mine 3/8 to a half an inch deeper than the line.

should the screw then be screwed in totally to clean the venturi? i would think it would still sucj the air even if it is just one turn in.

One turn seems to do it for me - it then tries to suck the air from the internal circuits which are flooded with water when you remove the cup.
