I'm in the process of gathering up the stuff to upgrade to a predrilled 90 . My 55 has the lights in a canopy and out the back and on the floor snuck out 2 crispy fish chips gets kinda expencive . I was thinking about getting a new light fixture that is suspended above the tank ( but with the open top how many fish take the plunge ? ) . I was just wondering what the pros and cons to these are I know the canopy keeps in more heat ( I have a chiller to keep the tank cool ) I'm concerend about the jumpers .

if jumpers are the main concern, you could fashion a cover out of plastic window screening. I have had to deal with jumpers from time to time, and when I built my new canopy I just made a tall ledge. It doesnt keep them entirely in the tank, but they've got to clear about 6" on the back to get out. It's worked so far. I kind of prefer the open top look, but you'll have to do something to keep jumpers in somehow, so maybe a canopy is a better solution for you.

What I did on my tank which I am currently using a canopy cause I like the look. Is I left the top off the canopy for more gas/heat exchange and on the back of he canopy I am using screen that u would use for a screen door and stapled that to the back. so nothing is jumping out and landing on my floor

I use a canopy to keep the jumpers in but also to stop from staring straight into the lights. I find it distracting when looking at the tank and getting blinded from above. As long as you put fans and venting in heat shouldn't be a problem.

I have used egg crate and bird netting but neither stopped jumpers. They go straight through but even worse than that is once they get through, the netting prevents them from being able to get back in. Had 2 wrasses that made it through only to be caught on top of the netting and got baked by the lights. I now have an open top tank with an enclosed canopy. If they jump, they just fall back in. Haven't had a problem yet.

Do you guys with open toped tanks lose a lot of fish ? I have lost 2 in about 6 months and they can only get out the back . A Blenny and a Green Chromis
