Posted this in the newbie section as well, but thought here too. This is for my brother who is looking at buying a 90g hex that comes with a fluval 404 filter. Can't find much info on this filter and wondered (his first tank that will be set up as an FO) if it will be o.k. or will he need to upgrade to something newer, if so any suggestions?

fluval is fine for mechanical...... most people like live rock and protein skimmer for filtration and/or wet dry filter of some kind

I tried this once, same tank, same filter, but I added an eheim wet/dry. I lost the account, and the filters havent been cleaned, water hasnt been changed, in at least 6 months, but all the fish are alive and well. I dont know if I would use the Fluval alone though.

I owned the eheim 2228 wet dry as well..... great for wet dry AND wavemaker BUT thats all it does, is expensive, and messes up the efficiency of using a hangon protein skimmer becasue the water level goes up and down about 1 - 3 inches when it fills and empties. I did love the effect though....wish it was more versatile
