9410 question

Hi

Can you tell me if it is possible to connect this skimmer to an airline running outside, i am not bothered about the overflow system, can this be bypassed to draw air from the outside of a building

Thanks

Mike

Yes, you would just connect an airline directly to the air intake that is run outside.

One last question, would this skimmer be ok for a tank thats 20 gallons with a 10 gallon sump, it will be running pellets

Thanks

That is taking overkill to a new extreme, but it would work. I would feel comfortable with a 9410 on a 120 gallon mixed reef, even SPS intensive/only if biopellets were used.

It would skim, my worry would be that you could strip the water of any trace elements, iodine being the one most easily removed, but for SPS, that likely is not too important and you should be able to run a very low nutrient system.

I have a long history of buying skimmers that are too powerful and too large for the tank. I do not recommend the 9410 for your 30 gallon set up.

Will it skim? sure.
Will it skim consistently with minimal intervention? I think not. The volume of organics needed to sustain a stable foam head will not likely be available over time. You are better off getting a skimmer that is properly sized for your water volume, bioload, etc.

That said, feel free to learn this the way I did. Please report back in 6 months-1 year and share your experience.

good luck.

That is a very valid point, it will remove things as they are added but will be idle a fair amount of the time because there is nothing left or just not enough to build a foam head.

Damn fine point

Maybe i should go for something a little smaller, although i guess, if it only works when it needs to that would be ok .. i would like to be able to heavily stock and still keep my nitrates as low as possible, so it could be good for that ..hmmmmmm

arguably, you may be able to maintain lower nutrient levels with a properly sized skimmer. This may seem counterintuitive, but I've seen it first hand.

You need a sufficient mass of organics to collect in the foam and maintain a stable foam head in the skimmer's neck. All other things being equal, you need more total mass of organics available in your water if you have a larger skimmer/neck.

Take an extreme example. If you put a super large Master doc 9480skimmmer on a 30 gallon tank, it would probably never skim or the water would have to get putrid before the was enough organics to make it work. The concentration of organics needed in 30 gallons would be very high.

Take that same skimmer on 1500 gallon tank and it would maintain nice low nutrient concentrations. the same total mass of organics would be needed to have a stable foam in both cases, but in the first case it is all concentrated in 30 gallons of water and the second case that organic mass is diluted 1500 gallons of water.

My analysis here is a bit implistic and I am not saying the 9410 is that extreme, but hopefully you get my point.

I am a big 9410 fan an I really like other tunze skimmers, Venturi and needlewheel. I am not sure which is best suited for your 30 gallons.

good luck.
