9420.040 not starting

Hi Roger,

Recently I bought a 9420 skimmer 2nd hand. I have tried it out and the motor refuses to start. It is making a humming noise so it is definitely trying to start, but no go.

I will chat to Graeme tomorrow in Aus, but as it is after hours here I am hoping you can offer some insight before that.

I did notice that the bearing down the bottom doesn't seem to neatly fit into a hole. Does this sound right? It looks as if the hole has been flared out somehow.

And just to confirm the magnet, shaft and impellor head are a fixed assembly so it looks like the whole lot spins in the 2 white bearings, each white bearing being housed in a red sleeve. I also noticed the sleeve appear to have a slightly different profile. Doors that sound right?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Regards

Adam

Your assumption of operation is correct, the bearings should be identical though and the bottom one should fit neatly in its socket. What typically causes one not to seat as you describe is that at some point the pump was dry or seized and heat caused the plastic to swell and deform. The heat is caused by the bearing being dragged on the hard plastic. I know of no way to fix this besides a new motor block.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'll have to order a new motor block today.

At least it's only 1/2 the price of an entire pump.

I also bought a used 9420 pump andit did not work, hummed so I put in a conatanier of vingear for a day and now it works great hope this it not a new pump as Roger stated. Just sharing my experience HTH

Cheers - I've order a new motor block and it should be here today.

Given the hole where the bottom bearing sits seems to be melted out of shape, I think it's a fair bet it's not calcium.

Do you have the 9420 skimmer or just the Hydrofoamer?

If you have the skimmer, what depth do you run it at/what should I being at?

Cheers

I just have two 9420 pumps, not their skimmer. I have a I-Tech 200 with the tunze 9420 hydrofamer. I bought a second pump just for a backup. The impellers are really cheap also.. When I bought my second pump I could not remove the impeller so I soaked in vinegar and it came right out and works great. Good luck with your skimmer.
