95 Gallon Build Thread

Dolphin Finatic
Finally saved up some money and it's time to get moving on this project.

The DT is a 95 gallon AGA wave aquarium that I got for 20 bucks brand new and no it did not fall off the back of a truck. Save that story for another time.

Unfortunately, I did have to purchase the matching stand for 400 bucks.

I recently built a 30 gallon sump with inspiration from ReefCentral, although I made one mistake. My return section is too small so I will
have to add a ATO unit to it which probably isn't a bad thing to do.

Sump is on right, fuge in the middle and return on the left.

I have a Mag 9.5 which will be doing the return duties and here is a list of parts I ordered last week and should arrive this week.

Orbit 150 watt HQI x 2 --- 4 54 watt T --- 18 lunar lights
MSX200 Protein Skimmer
2 Jager 250 watt heaters
Tunze 6055 NanoStreams
Tunze 6101 Controller
ReefKeeper2

Things still left to order

RODI unit
Float Controller

Various other things besides livestock I'm sure will come up

I'm getting the RODI unit from FilterGuys and have Jim looking into the best system for me since I do run on well water.

Once I see how circulation is I may or may not add another Tunze

Well, tag along and wish me luck ... oh almost forgot, I picked this up today to take some nice shots once I'm up and running

Picked up a couple toys today and will have to send some back to Marine Depot ..

I originally ordered a NanoStream 6055 @ 227.00 and a 6101 controller, so I stop by my LFS and they had the powerhead for 175 and 7095 controller for 200.

After contemplating, I picked them up.

I have the sump up and running, doing a flow test and one thing I know I immediately dislike is the noise of the Mag Drive. What brand
is recommended for low noise ?

There may well be air in the assembly somewhere. A lot of people do experience noise with Mags but I've used them extensively and in wet and dry applications over many years, and they are reliable and silent every time. So, before you give up on yours, check that out.

I use an Eheim 1262... Has just a slight hum, that I was able to dampen to almost nothing with a silicone pad. Also, I've heard Aquamedic Ocean Runner's are very quiet.

Is there a exploded view on how to take apart a mag drive ? ... I'll see if I can shoot a little video so you guys can here it.

TSwifty,

I was originally going to get a Ocean Runner and for whatever reason changed my mind. If I can get the mag running, I'll look into it, although I've heard alot of people like the eheims. .... I would prefer something that uses less power to create about the same flow as the Mag ... less watts means less heat ...

Thanks

Damn I want one of those wave tanks....they look so SWEET!!!!.....I will for sure keep this bookmarked!!! good luck will come with slow progress and patience.....Try to let it cycle for at least 2 months before any CUC....IMO

Don't quite know what that acronym means, but I'm in no hurry. Still have the mini reef running out in the living room. I have things outgrowing their environment in there ( polyps, frogspawn ).

Tomorrow the skimmer comes in and I'll et it run in the sump for a while although it won't do much cause there's no salt in it.

Thursday, all my other goodies will be here, still need to order the RODI and possibly two more 6055's

Test run checking the flow, this is with the Mag Drive throttled back to about 3/4 flow which should simulate how fast my overflow drains...

This is also the light I will use on my fuge ... jury is still out on the noise of the pump

I have a Mag 12 inside my sump directed in a couple of different directions. Anyway i cut a mouse pad in 1/2 and placed it underneath my pump and it absorbed pretty much all noise. It worked incredibly.

sounds good, now just need to find a non toxic mouse pad.

Got the skimmer in today and the pump is making a awful noise, posted in the skimmer forum hoping for a fix.

Use a mouse pad or a plastic bag filled w/ sand under your pump to deaden the noise. You can also make a silicone pad by spreading some silicone on wax paper, then peal the wax paper off after it's all dry.

Skimmer is in, MSX200 ... didn't realize how big it was, even though I read the dimension while designing the sump...

Running in fresh water, the pump is fine, I just had the airline pinched

Santa Claus came today in the form of FedEx and UPS. Is there anyone here who doesn't enjoy seeing those trucks ?

Couple things, I thought I originally ordered to 200 watt heaters but ordered the 250 watters. Their too long for my sump so their going to have to go in the overflow, not a big deal, but not what I wanted. Bah.

Next is the Tunze, ordered these and then found my LFS with them substantially cheaper and decided to pick up the PH and Multicontroller. I don't know whether to return to MD or keep them. I may just hang onto the PH and sell the controller at a loss since it will cost me to ship it back minus restocking fees.

Little bit of bad news... one of the 420nm bulbs was broke, called DrF&S ... they apologized and asked me the part number and sent out immediately.

Great Customer service ... for only 150 x 2 HQI ... these are bright.

and the RK2 ... what a neat little toy

I also use 2 - 150w bulbs and I'm very happy with the brightness. Less toll on my electric bills and less heat generated, compared to 250.
